Gareth Meirion-GriffithMechanical, Materials and Aerospace Engineering (MMAE) Ph.D. Candidate
Gareth Meirion-Griffith made the decision to join the IIT community after discussing his graduate research with his now advisor, Assistant Professor Matt Spenko, and discovering that at IIT, he could continue his work in vehicle-terrain interaction at the doctoral level. Born in Leicestershire, England, Meirion-Griffith obtained his undergraduate degree from Kingston University and his master’s degree from the University of Surrey, both in the United Kingdom.
One of Meirion-Griffith's favorite parts of the MMAE doctoral program thus far is the fact that it is heavily applications based, which he feels, leads to the practical implementation of theoretical ideas. "This kind of work really encourages you to fully understand every element of a wide variety of subjects, something that cannot be gained from theory alone," he says.
Before earning his master's degree, Meirion-Griffith, worked as a spacecraft controller in Europe’s Meteosat program in Germany. Both his undergraduate and graduate degrees are in astronautics and spacecraft engineering and he plans to continue working in this field after earning his Ph.D. He says, "My future plans have always been pretty well set, and earning a Ph.D. at IIT has certainly fit in very well."
