Kalyanji M. Gala founded International Marketing Corp. in Mumbai, India, in 1975 to bring advanced technologies such as semiconductors and solar-energy equipment to the country. International Marketing also specializes in cable-harnessing assemblies for the automobile, aviation, and aerospace industries, and works with 40 manufacturing partners across the world to ensure quality products. Gala also founded Byculla Cold Storage in Mumbai in 1971, a facility for commercial cold storage needs.
In 2010, Gala received an IIT Global Service Award for his efforts in strengthening the university’s reputation on an international scale. Gala helped to establish an IIT Alumni Association in India and for more than a decade organized many alumni events, including the IIT Asian Alumni meeting that featured a food processing and safety innovation symposium.
Besides his achievements in business, Gala has led efforts to empower and support local artisans and farmers. He is president of the Shree Vivekanand Gramudyog Society, an organization that trains and employs women of the Kutch—India’s largest district—in embroidery, painting, and stitching. He is also a trustee of the Vivekanand Research and Training Institute and a director of Kutch Crop Services, Ltd. Both groups work to help district farmers with issues of water quality, drought, and earthquakes.
