Summer Assistance

All students interested in applying for federal funds for summer session 2009 must read the following information. After registering for the required credit hours, students will be automatically packaged for the Summer 2009 term. You will be able to view the amount of your summer continuation scholarship online via the myIIT Portal. If you are eligible for any federal financial aid, the Office of Financial Aid will contact you via e-mail with the details of your award.

Undergraduate students are eligible to apply for Federal Stafford loans, Federal PLUS loans, and the Federal Pell Grant for the summer semester if they are enrolled in at least six credit hours and have remaining eligibility from the previous fall and spring terms.

Once a student registers for six credit hours, the Financial Aid Office will determine eligibility for federal aid and contact the student with the results.

If you received an IIT undergraduate tuition scholarship (such as Heald, Camras, University, etc.) in the 2008-2009 academic year, you will be entitled to the same level of scholarship support over Summer 2009.The Summer Continuation Scholarship is applicable towards undergraduate courses applicable to their undergraduate degree. The practice of accepting petitions for summer tuition scholarships on a case-by-case basis has been discontinued. Examples calculating the Summer Continuation Scholarship for students in several different situations are given below. The Summer Continuation Scholarship will cover up to 100%tuition. It will not cover fees, books, or other miscellaneous expenses.

Example A

Student A would receive a Summer Continuation Scholarship covering $16,000/26,709 or 60% of the 2009 summer tuition charge for courses applicable to his/her undergraduate degree. So, for example, if Student A took one 3 credit hour course in the summer at $832/credit hour, the tuition charge would be $2,496; the scholarship would cover (0.60)(2496) = $1,497.60 of the tuition charge.

Example B

Student B would receive a Summer Continuation Scholarship covering 26,709/26,709 or 100% of the 2009 summer tuition charge for courses applicable to his/her undergraduate degree.

Example C

Student C would receive a Summer Continuation Scholarship covering 5,000/13,355 or about 37% of the 2009 summer tuition charge for courses applicable to his/her undergraduate degree. Note that Student C is an example of a student who did not receive an IIT award in the fall. He/she could have been a part-time student or a co-op student in the fall; or he/she could have been a new student in the spring.

*Please note that ROTC students are eligible for the Summer Continuation Scholarship. For calculation purposes, the Office of Financial Aid will utilize the institutional scholarship award offered to the student prior to entry into the ROTC program.

All graduate students interested in applying for federal funds for summer session 2009 must contact the office of Financial Aid once they register for the Summer 2009 term to be packaged for federal financial aid. Graduate students that wish to borrow Federal Stafford Loans for the summer 2009 session must have remaining eligibility from the 2008-2009 academic year. Graduate students are also eligible for a Graduate PLUS loan up to the cost of attendance for the summer 2009 term. Please note that students must be registered for at least 4.5 credit hours to receive Federal Loans.
