    Post-9/11 Yellow Ribbon Program

    The Illinois Institute of Technology is pleased participate in the Department of Veteran Affairs' Yellow Ribbon Program. As a benefit of this program, eligible military veterans can attend the Illinois Institute of Technology at little to no out-of-pocket tuition cost. Both undergraduates and graduate (full-time and part-time) students are eligible to participate in the Yellow Ribbon Program.

    Yellow Ribbon Eligibility Requirements

    Only individuals entitled to the maximum benefit rate (based on service requirements) may receive this funding. Therefore, you may be eligible if:
    • You served an aggregate period of active duty after September 10, 2001, of at least 36 months;
    • You were honorably discharged from active duty for a service connected disability and you served 30 continuous days after September 10, 2001;
    • You are a dependent eligible for Transfer of Entitlement under the Post-9/11 GI Bill based on a veteran's service under the eligibility criteria listed above.

    Yellow Ribbon Estimate Calculation

    Essentially, the Yellow Ribbon benefits for an IIT undergraduate student covers all the tuition expense you will have. Even though the VA benefit covers at the state tuition rate, I can give you a general outline of what your benefits would look like if you came here.

    Yellow Ribbon, here is what you are eligible to receive using the current amount for IL ($629.75/credit) for 18 credit hours:

            $16,261.50 – Total IIT charges ($629.75 * 18)
            $11,335.50 – From Ch. 33 VA benefit coverage
            $  2,463.00 – From Yellow Ribbon VA benefit coverage
            $  2,463.00 – From IIT VA match coverage

            $16,261.50 – Total Yellow Ribbon coverage

    Just to be clear, the above information is just an example for the policy in place this year with the VA benefits. State tuition rates are subject to change, in addition if you receive an IL MAP grant, this will also have to be included in determining the benefits too. You are also eligible to submit a FAFSA, so you can use the federal aid you are offered to help with any other additional expenses you may have while at IIT. In addition, the VA certification also initiates a housing allowance too, so your loan borrowing should be conservative.

        For the 2010-2011 academic year, IIT had twenty students who participate in the Yellow Ribbon Program.
