Student Employment
Illinois Institute of Technology believes work experience is a vital and significant component in preparing the student for a future career. Student employment is an opportunity to advance the individual's work ethic and knowledge base. This belief reflects the university's overall commitment to education and underscores its endorsement of self-development. To achieve this, the Office of Financial Aid partners with the Career Management Center to support and partner with on-campus employers and students, to develop positive and productive working relationships.
The Office of Financial Aid manages employment for all federal work study positions on campus and the Career Management Center maintains employment for all non-federal work study positions.
The Federal Work-Study Program (FWS) is an employment program for domestic undergraduate and graduate student which requires students to earn their award amount through work. FWS eligibility is determined on an annual basis using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) submitted to the Department of Education. Up to $2,500 of Federal Work Study (FWS) funds may be awarded to students who demonstrate exceptional financial need. A federal work study award simply authorizes a student to participate in the program and sets a limit as to the amount of income a student can earn during the academic year. It is the responsibility of the student to find on campus employment and work enough hours to reach the earnings limit.
Work-study students receive a paychecks biweekly based on the number of hours worked and hourly rate of pay. After a student earns the full FWS award, the student's employment ends, unless the IIT department employer offers to pay the student employee's wages from the department's budget account.
Award Acceptance
There are many different jobs available through the federal work study program, varying in the areas of interest, degree of difficulty, and wage rate. With a variety of positions available, it is hoped that students will find jobs which are both interesting and related to their career goals. To accept this award, the student should visit the MyIIT portal, under Financial Aid Awards for the current academic year on the Finances Tab. Once this award is accepted, the student can view available federal work study positions here:

Students who are eligible to participate in the federal work study program can choose utilize their federal work study (FWS) funds to perform community service. Community service is defined by the Department of Education as services that are identified by an institution of higher education with local nonprofit, government, and community-based organizations, designed to improve the quality of life for community residents, particularly low-income individuals, or to solve particular problems related to their needs. These services include:
- Such fields as health care, child care, literacy training, education, welfare, social services, transportation, housing and neighborhood improvement, public safety, crime prevention and control, recreation, rural development, and community improvement;
- Work in service opportunities or youth corps as defined in Section 101 of the National and Community Service Act of 1990, and service in the agencies, institutions, and activities designated in Section 124(a) of that act;
- Support services for students with disabilities; and
- Activities in which an FWS student serves as a mentor for such purposes as tutoring, supporting educational and recreational activities and counseling.
To be considered employed in a community service job for FWS purposes, the FWS student does not have to provide a "direct" service. However, the student must provide services that are designed to improve the quality of life for community residents or to solve particular problems related to those residents' needs.
