Carr Chapel Exterior Restoration Complete
Exterior restoration of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's only ecclesiastical building, Robert F. Carr Memorial Chapel, was completed on August 28. In this first phase of the restoration project, the roof of the chapel was replaced, the exterior glass and steel elements were repaired and partially replaced, and the damaged exterior brick corners were repaired. This fall, the curtain that hangs behind the altar of the chapel will be replaced with a new curtain that compares closely with the original curtain created for the chapel under Mies’ direction. The fabric will be specially woven in Italy by Donghia, Inc. and then carefully pleated and hung by Cornel Erdbeer, the owner of Chicago-based Ludwig Interiors Incorporated. Both Donghia, Inc. and Erdbeer are donating materials and services in honor of this important project. Modern Mondays
