Intent to Enroll Confirmation
When you have made your enrollment decision, please complete the online Intent to Enroll form to notify us of your plans. (International students: Please submit this form only after you receive your visa.)
Housing
Students are strongly encouraged to contact Housing Services as early as possible to reserve or inquire about on-campus housing. For complete information about on-campus, off-campus, and temporary housing options, please visit the Housing Services website or contact that office directly at housing@iit.edu or 312.567.5075.
Health Insurance Requirement
All full-time students, occupants of IIT residence halls, and international students on F-1 or J-1 visas are required to purchase IIT's student health insurance policy. U.S. students have the option to submit proof of equivalent insurance, instead. Eligible students who wish to be considered for an insurance waiver must fill out the Student Health Insurance Waiver form. Part-time students, spouses of students, and/or minor children can purchase insurance, if desired. For more information, visit the Student Health Services website or contact that office directly at student.health@iit.edu or 312.567.7550.
Immunization Requirement
Students are required to submit proof of immunization against certain communicable diseases to the Student Health Center. Individuals who are not properly immunized or who do not have proof of immunization may receive the required immunizations at the Student Health Center for a nominal fee. For more information, visit the Student Health Services website or contact that office directly at student.health@iit.edu or 312.567.7550.
Student Email Account and Portal Access
New IIT students receive a unique identifier (UID) that is also your IIT email username and login for IIT's networking and computing services. Your university-designated student email account will be the official means of communication between you and the university once you enroll, and (for U.S. students only) will be used to notify you of your financial aid award if you apply for federal financial aid. You will receive instructions via email for looking up your UID and logging in to the myIIT student portal.
International students: Your UID, email account, and student portal access will be activated only after the Office of Graduate and Professional Enrollment has received and processed your required financial support documents.
Course Descriptions and Schedule
The Graduate Catalog contains complete program and course descriptions. Course listings for upcoming semesters are posted on the course schedule search web page as they are finalized.
Academic Advising and Registration
All graduate students are encouraged to consult with a faculty advisor prior to registration. Some academic departments or programs (e.g., ECE and non-degree CS or MMAE) require advising before students are permitted to register, so be sure to check with your department before getting started.
Your assigned academic advisor, whose name appears at the bottom of your official admission letter, can give you the unique "Alternate PIN" number you will need in order to register through the myIIT student portal. If you are a U.S. student and your academic department does not require advising, the Registrar's Office (registrar@iit.edu or 312.567.3100) can provide your Alternate PIN number.
International students: You will be permitted to register only after you have arrived on campus, checked in with the International Center, and submitted any remaining documents to the Office of Graduate and Professional Enrollment.
For additional assistance with registration, visit the Registrar's Office website or contact your academic department.
Tuition Payments
Information about current graduate tuition and fees is available here. To learn more about tuition and fee rates, payment methods and payment plans, visit the Bursar's Office website or contact that office directly at bursar@iit.edu or 312.567.3794.
Financial Assistance
Graduate fellowships, teaching assistantships and research assistantships are awarded by individual departments to a limited number of highly qualified, full-time students at the time of admission. Departmental funding is based on merit, and every applicant is automatically considered upon timely submission of a complete application packet. If you receive a funding award, you will be notified of the award in your official admission letter.
The Office of Financial Aid also assists new and continuing graduate students in gathering information about how best to finance their education. For complete information about graduate financing options, including federal student loans (available to U.S. students only), visit the Office of Financial Aid website or contact that office directly at finaid@iit.edu or 312.567.7219.
Orientation
Complete information about orientation activities will be posted on the New Student Orientation web pages as the new semester draws near.
Student Identification Cards and Parking Permits
The Access, Card, and Parking Services Office issues all university student identification cards and parking permits.
All registered full- and part-time students who will be studying on campus should obtain a student identification card. Distance learning students who are interested in getting an IIT ID card should email their request to hawkcard@iit.edu. For more information about student identification cards, visit the HawkCard website or call 312.567.8968.
For information about parking on campus, visit the Parking Services website or call 312.567.8968.
Buying Textbooks
To purchase books and supplies for your classes, visit the Illinois Institute of Technology bookstore website, or visit the store on the main level of the McCormick Tribune Campus Center at 3201 S. State Street. For more information, call 312.567.3120.
Career Development
It's never too early to get started on your career path. To learn about services offered by the Career Management Center (CMC), visit the Career Management Center website or contact that office directly at cmc@iit.edu or 312.567.6800.
Academic Policies
The Graduate Student Handbook (pdf), published by the Graduate College, outlines important academic policies and graduate student rights and responsibilities.
Additional Steps for International Students:
IIT's International Center is here to assist international students as they prepare to begin graduate studies at IIT. For complete information about international student prearrival procedures, arrival in the U.S., transportation to campus (including free shuttle service from the airport) and check-in requirements, please visit the International Center website or contact that office directly at icenter@iit.edu or 312.567.3680.
Applying for a Visa and Paying the SEVIS Fee
Current visa wait time information is available on the U.S. Department of State website. The United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) requires a one-time SEVIS fee for all F-1 and J-1 visa applicants. For detailed payment instructions and answers to frequently asked questions, visit the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement website.
International Center Check-In
All international students must check in within two business days upon arrival to IIT. Please bring your I-20/DS-2019 form, I-94 card, and passport with you to be processed by staff from the International Center. This check-in process allows us to remove a special hold from your record that otherwise will prevent you from registering for classes.
Late Arrival
You must report to IIT no later than the start date listed on your I-20. Only under special circumstances (difficulties in obtaining a visa, unavailability of plane tickets, or family emergency) may students be allowed to arrive after this date. In such cases, students must request permission for late arrival and obtain an approval letter by contacting Deborah Gibson, Director of Graduate and Professional Admission, at gibsond@iit.edu. Your emailed request, with subject line "Late Arrival Request," must include your full name, IIT applicant ID number, and the reason for your delayed arrival.
