Frequently Asked Questions: Non-degree Admission

    • Who should apply as a non-degree student?
If you are unsure of your degree objective; if you are unable to complete your application in time to meet the application deadline; if you have a cumulative undergraduate GPA of less than 3.0/4.0 but at least 2.5/4.0; or if you simply wish to take some courses to test your interest in graduate study, update your knowledge in your professional field, or for personal enrichment, you should consider applying as a non-degree student.

      C
itizens or permanent residents of the United States who have completed a bachelor's degree with at least a 2.5/4.0 cumulative undergraduate GPA are eligible to apply for non-degree admission. International applicants requiring an I-20 or DS-2019 from IIT are not eligible to apply or enroll as non-degree students.

    • How do I apply for non-degree studies?
For complete instructions, review the application deadlines and application checklist for non-degree applicants.

    • If I begin my studies as a non-degree student, can I apply for degree-seeking status at a later time?
Yes. However, non-degree students who wish to change to degree-seeking status must apply for degree-seeking admission prior to the completion of six credit hours of study at IIT. Please note that admission as a non-degree student does not guarantee future admission to a degree program.

Review the application checklist page for a list of items required to complete your degree-seeking application.

    • Can my non-degree credits transfer toward a degree?
Only nine credit hours of approved coursework taken as a non-degree student and passed with a grade of "B" or better can be applied toward a degree at IIT. Your non-degree GPA must be at least 3.0/4.0 for admission consideration to a degree program. We strongly recommend that you speak with an academic advisor before selecting your courses, if you wish to take courses that will be applicable to a degree program later.

    • I have been admitted as a non-degree student. What should I do next?
Your official admission letter will include the name of your academic advisor, with whom you are encouraged to speak prior to enrolling in classes. Some departments require advising prior to registration.

Registration can be completed online through the myIIT student portal. For additional assistance with registration, visit the Registrar's Office website or contact your academic department.
    • Why was I admitted as a non-degree student when I applied to a degree program?
Students whose applications indicate potential for success but who do not meet university or department admission standards may be offered the opportunity to begin their studies as a non-degree student.

Non-degree students who wish to be (re)considered for degree-seeking status later must complete an application for degree-seeking status prior to completing six credit hours of graduate study at IIT. If admitted, a maximum of nine credit hours of pre-approved coursework taken as a non-degree student and passed with a grade of "B" or better may be applied toward the degree program.

Please note that enrollment as a non-degree student does not guarantee later admission to a degree-seeking program. Your academic department will make an admission decision only after reviewing your complete application packet, including transcripts from your non-degree coursework at IIT.
