Degree-seeking Students
Description: Any student pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy, Master of Science, or Professional Master's degree is considered a regular degree-seeking student. A degree-seeking student is a registered student who submitted an application for admission as a degree-seeking student, was accepted by an academic unit in a specific degree program, and received a formal letter of admission. Degree-seeking students are required to register every semester except summer unless they receive special permission in writing for a leave of absence (Form #216) from the Graduate College's Office of Academic Affairs.
Application: A completed application form and supporting documents must be received by the deadline for consideration as a regular degree-seeking student.
Requirements: IIT requires a bachelor's degree conferred with a minimum undergraduate cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0 (or its equivalent) from an accredited institution for regular admission. Students with an undergraduate GPA of at least 2.5/4.0 may be admitted as non-degree students.
Please note: Meeting the minimum GPA and test score requirements does not guarantee admission. While the minimum requirements listed here should be helpful to you in determining your eligibility, your academic department will make an admission decision only after reviewing your complete application packet.
Applicants to the following programs should refer directly to their respective websites for admission criteria and application instructions:
- Chicago-Kent College of Law
- College of Architecture
- Institute of Design
- Institute of Psychology
- Stuart School of Business
Certificate Students
Description: A certificate student is a student who submitted an application for admission as a certificate student, was admitted by the Office of Graduate Admission for a specific certificate program, and registered as a certificate student at IIT.
Application: A completed application form and supporting documents must be received by the deadline for consideration as a certificate student.
Requirements: IIT requires a bachelor's degree conferred with a minimum undergraduate cumulative GPA of 2.5/4.0 (or its equivalent) from an accredited institution for admission as a certificate student.
Prerequisites: A certificate student whose bachelor's degree is not in the field of certificate study or a closely related field may be required to take additional prerequisite courses that may not count toward the certificate.
Enrollment: Certificate students are permitted to enroll in as many credit hours as are necessary to complete the certificate.
Credit transfer: Certificate students who later apply and are admitted to a master's degree program at IIT may apply all approved certificate coursework with a grade of "B" or higher to the master's degree.
Non-degree Students
Description: Citizens and permanent residents of the United States who have applied for a degree program at IIT but are unable to complete the application requirements before the deadline may be eligible to begin studies as a non-degree student. A non-degree student is a registered student who holds an undergraduate degree from an accredited institution, submitted an application for admission as a non-degree student, and was admitted to the Graduate College. Non-degree students are those who wish to improve their professional or personal development without being required to fulfill degree requirements, are not certain about their prospective field of study at IIT, have less than a 3.0/4.0 undergraduate GPA, or are unable to submit a completed regular application prior to the beginning of the semester. Non-degree students are not accepted into a graduate degree program and are not classified as degree-seeking students.
Application: A completed application form must be received by the first day of the semester. Final official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended must be received by the fourth week of classes. A one-time application fee is also required, and can be applied to multiple applications.
Requirements: IIT requires a bachelor's degree conferred with a minimum undergraduate cumulative GPA of 2.5/4.0 (or its equivalent) from an accredited institution for admission as a non-degree student.
Admission: A final admission decision (for regular-degree seeking admission) may be deferred until the requisite GPA has been achieved in study as a non-degree student, or until the required documents are available. The Office of Graduate Admission will notify non-degree students of the conditions under which they are admitted.
Enrollment: Non-degree students must apply for admission as regular graduate students prior to the completion of six credit hours of study.
Changing to degree-seeking status: Non-degree students seeking to convert to degree-seeking status must complete a regular application and request admission to a degree program prior to the completion of six credit hours of study. If a non-degree student applies for and is granted admission to a degree program, a maximum of nine credit hours of approved coursework taken as a non-degree student and passed with a grade of "B" or better may be applied to the degree. International students cannot be admitted as non-degree students. Non-degree students who wish to continue to take courses as non-degree students beyond nine credit hours must declare, in writing, their respective intents not to pursue a degree program to the Graduate College's Office of Academic Affairs.
Credit transfer: Eligible coursework completed by non-degree students, pre-approved by the academic unit (up to nine credit hours of courses passed with a grade of "B" or better), may be applicable toward a graduate degree at IIT.
Undergraduate Post-Baccalaureate Students
An applicant who holds a bachelor's degree but who is ineligible for graduate admission may be admitted as an Undergraduate Post-Baccalaureate (UPB) student. In general, UPB admission is offered to domestic applicants who are required to complete undergraduate coursework to improve their undergraduate performance or complete prerequisites for graduate study. These students may later be (re)considered for admission as graduate students at IIT. Students should apply for UPB status through the Office of Undergraduate Admission, located in Perlstein Hall at 10 W. 33rd Street, Room 101. For more information, contact Ryan Nelson at nelsonr@iit.edu or 312.567.5192.
GRE Requirements
The university minimum Graduate Record Examination (GRE) score is 900 (quantitative + verbal) and 2.5 (analytical writing). Individual departments may require higher scores for admission (see chart below). GRE requirements are subject to change, so please reference the Graduate Bulletin or your academic department's website for the most up-to-date information.
The Office of Graduate Admission requires official scores sent directly to IIT by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). Please ask ETS to send your scores to institution code 1318. No department code is required.

Waiver: The GRE requirement may be waived for applicants to professional master's degree programs who hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited U.S. college or university with a cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0 or higher.
TOEFL Requirements
Applicants whose undergraduate degree was earned at an institution where the primary language of instruction is not English must prove proficiency in English by submitting Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores. A minimum score of 550 (paper-based) or 213 (computer-based) or 80 (Internet-based test) is required for admission consideration. Students with a score between 550-599 (paper-based) or 213-249 (computer-based) or 80-99 (Internet-based test) will be required to take the IIT EPR exam.
The Office of Graduate Admission requires official scores sent directly to IIT by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). Please ask ETS to send your scores to institution code 1318. No department code is required.
Waiver: Applicants who hold degrees from institutions where the primary language of instruction is English are exempt from the TOEFL requirement. However, TOEFL scores may be requested at the discretion of the applicant's academic department if the verbal portion of his or her GRE is significantly low.
EPR Requirements
Admitted students with a TOEFL score between 550-599 (paper-based) or 213-249 (computer-based) or 80-99 (Internet-based test), or those who have a significantly low verbal score on the GRE exam, may be required to take the IIT English Proficiency Review (EPR) exam. This exam is held the week before the student's first semester begins, and determines whether he or she will be required to take additional English courses.
