Application Checklist
Applicants to programs in Armour College of Engineering, Center for Professional Development, and College of Science and Letters:
Your application will be reviewed for admission consideration once the Office of Graduate and Professional Enrollment has received and processed all of the items on the appropriate checklist below. Exceptions: Financial support documents and School Transfer Forms may be submitted after admission.
- Application
If you have trouble accessing or submitting the online application, please notify us at inquiry.grad@iit.edu. Applying online will expedite the processing and review of your application. Paper applications are discouraged and require an $80 application fee, but are available upon request. - Application fee
This $40 fee may be paid (a) by credit card or Paypal account when prompted in the online application process, (b) by credit card through the IIT Bursar's Office payment website, or (c) by check or money order made payable to Illinois Institute of Technology and mailed to the Office of Graduate and Professional Enrollment. For the most expedient processing, we recommend option (a).
The fee is waived for applicants who have been enrolled at IIT in the past or who attend an IIT graduate open house event. - Transcripts
We require complete transcripts from each university you have attended for any length of time (both undergraduate and graduate study).
Official transcripts sent directly to IIT by your previous institution(s) are preferred. However, a "student copy" of your transcripts from any U.S. institution or photocopied transcripts/marksheets that are properly attested (bearing the original university seal/stamp and the original signature of a school official such as a dean or registrar on each page) from any non-U.S. institution can be accepted for the purpose of application review and admission decision. Scanned or faxed documents cannot be accepted. All students will be required to submit official, original documents prior to enrolling, if admitted.
Individual marksheets are required from all institutions that issue them (e.g., Indian universities). Consolidated transcripts from those institutions cannot be accepted.
If your prior institution does not issue transcripts in English, both the original and an English translation are required. If your prior institution does not use the 4.0 scale grading system, your admission coordinator in the Office of Graduate and Professional Enrollment will convert your grades to that system upon review of your transcripts. - Professional statement
Your professional statement should be written in essay format and should not exceed 1000 words. It should include discussion of your reasons for pursuing graduate study, your academic background, your research interests (if applicable), relevant professional experience or related accomplishments to date, and your career goals.
Your statement may be submitted (a) as part of the online application process, (b) as an email attachment sent to gradstu@iit.edu, or (c) by fax to 312.567.3138. For the most expedient processing, we recommend option (a). Please choose only one form of submission. - Letters of recommendation
Letters of recommendation should be submitted from individuals who are able to assess your academic and/or career achievements and potential. Recommenders may include professors or employers, but may not include family members or personal friends.
Master's degree applicants must submit two letters; Ph.D. applicants must submit three. Please do not submit more letters than are required for your application. Additional letters will not be reviewed by the admission committee.
Your recommenders may choose (a) to complete IIT's online recommendation, available by invitation through your online application; or (b) to submit an original letter of recommendation by email or fax. For the most expedient processing, we recommend option (a). Please choose only one form of submission.
Option (a):
If you choose to invite recommenders through your online application, please note: Once you send an invitation, it cannot be deleted or changed. However, if you need to send an invitation to an additional recommender, or to re-send an invitation to a current recommender at a new email address, simply log in to your online application and use the invitation link. You can create a new invitation at any time.
Options (b) or (c):
Original letters of recommendation may be sent to IIT by email to gradstu@iit.edu or by fax to 312.567.3138. Again, please choose just one form of submission. Each letter must include the applicant's full name, applicant ID number, major, and term of entry; must bear the recommender's original signature (for fax submissions) or come directly from his or her email address (for email submissions); and must be dated no more than one year prior to the first day of classes in the semester to which you've applied.
Whether you submit your letters of recommendation online, by email, or by fax, it may take up to two weeks from the time we receive them for your application status to update online. We are working hard to enter all credentials into our database as quickly as possible, and we appreciate your patience. - GRE scores
We require official Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores sent directly to IIT by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). Please ask ETS to send your scores to institution code 1318; no department code is required. Read complete GRE score requirements. - TOEFL or IELTS scores (if required)
Any applicant whose undergraduate degree was earned at an institution where the primary language of instruction is not English must submit Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) scores. Read complete English proficiency requirements.
We require official TOEFL scores sent directly to IIT by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). Please ask ETS to send your scores to institution code 1318; no department code is required. If you took the IELTS exam instead of the TOEFL, please mail your official IELTS score reports to the Office of Graduate and Professional Enrollment. - International students only: Financial support documents
IIT accepts proof of financial support in either of the following two formats:
- Bank official's signature and bank seal on IIT's Financial Support Form (pdf). Please read all instructions carefully to ensure that each required section of the form is complete.
- Original bank statement dated in the past six months, showing the required amount in your own or your sponsor's bank account. The statement must be on the bank's letterhead and bear the bank official's signature and stamp (bank seal). If your education will be sponsored by someone other than yourself, you must additionally submit a notarized letter from your sponsor confirming their plans to pay for your graduate studies. The letter must be signed and dated within the past one year.
You may submit documents for up to three bank accounts that sum to the required total. Complete documentation (see options 1 or 2 above) is required for each account or each sponsor.
You may submit your financial support documents after being notified of admission, if you wish; however, an I-20 cannot be issued to any admitted student until valid documents have been received and approved by the Office of Graduate and Professional Enrollment. For this reason, we encourage you to submit them as early as possible.
Immigration regulations stipulate that financial support documents must be no more than six months old at the time an I-20 is issued. If your documents have expired at the time your admission decision is made, you will be asked to submit new documents. Exception: Students who are admitted to IIT with valid financial support documents and who subsequently defer their admission to a later term will not be required to submit new proof of financial support. A new I-20 will be issued based on the documents accepted for the original term of admission.
- Bank official's signature and bank seal on IIT's Financial Support Form (pdf). Please read all instructions carefully to ensure that each required section of the form is complete.
- International transfer students only: School Transfer Form
The School Transfer Form (pdf) must be submitted by any international student currently studying on an F-1 visa who intends to transfer to IIT from another institution in the United States. It indicates the release of your I-20 by your current institution, permitting IIT to create a new I-20 for you. This form should be submitted only after you officially have been admitted to IIT.
