Application and Admission Requirements
Please carefully review our how to apply and application checklist pages for complete application instructions. We encourage international applicants to complete the application process as early as possible due to the length of time required to obtain your student visa.
U.S. visa regulations require that all F or J visa holders provide certified evidence they will have adequate funds to meet expenses for a proposed program of study. We encourage applicants to submit financial support documents as early as possible, but they may be submitted after admission, if preferred. Visit the application checklist page for submission instructions.
Transfer Requirements
Applicants transferring to IIT from another university must submit all grades from every semester of each university attended, including the current school from which the student intends to transfer, to the Office of Graduate and Professional Enrollment before an admission decision can be made. Read more about transfer requirements.
Visa Types
F-1 visa: Issued to holders of SEVIS I-20 forms, permits study in the United States and a period of practical training following completion of the academic program. Spouses and children of F-1 students obtain F-2 visas.
Admitted international students currently holding another visa status in the U.S. with plans to change to an F-1 student visa will need to be issued a "Change of Status" I-20 from IIT. Please consult the IIT International Center for assistance with this process.
J-1 visa: Issued to holders of DS-2019 forms, permits study in the United States and a period of academic training. Please note that under certain circumstances, an individual is subject to a two-year home country presence requirement after completion of the program prior to a change in the visa category. Spouses and children of J-1 students obtain J-2 visas.
I-20 Mailing Policy
