IIT Apartments

The IIT Apartments offer an example of Mies's work in reinforced concrete. The concrete frame is expressed on the surface of the buildings and the recessed, glass-walled lobbies demonstrate that the concrete cage supports the building. Supporting columns, which step back every three floors and grow slimmer in diameter, announce that the column has less weight to support as it climbs up the structure. It also provides subtle decoration.

The IIT Apartments are home to many graduate students and some faculty and staff and their families.
