Goldsmith, a student of Mies and a research professor of architecture uses the architectural vocabulary and grid established by Mies.

Engineering 1 is home to mechanical, materials, and aerospace engineering facilities. E1 also houses the Fluid Dynamics Research Center, which includes the world's most advanced university wind tunnel for subsonic research, and the Pritzker Institute of Biomedical Engineering, as well as the office of the Dean of Armour College.
