MMAE Grad Student Wins MAGS Distinguished Master’s Thesis Award
May 1, 2013MMAE graduate student Amirhossein Arzani recently won the Midwestern Association of Graduate Schools (MAGS) Distinguished Master’s Thesis Award. This award recognizes and rewards distinguished scholarship and research at the master’s level. To be considered, a thesis must contain original work that makes an unusually significant contribution to the discipline. Arzani won a $750 cash prize and traveled to present his work at the MAGS Annual Meeting in Minneapolis in early April. -
Chemistry Alum Susan Solomon Wins BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award

Architecture Graduate Student Kai Hansen Wins High-Rise Building Scholarship
January 15, 2013Master of Science student Kai Hansen has been selected as the 2012 recipient of the Chicago Committee on High-Rise Buildings Scholarship in recognition of his thesis research. -
IIT Trustee Martin Cooper (EE ′50, M.S. ′57) and Other Mobile Phone Pioneers Win Draper Prize
January 15, 2013The mobile phone pioneers who laid the groundwork for today’s smartphone will be presented with engineering’s highest honor during a February 19 ceremony in Washington. The National Academy of Engineering (NAE) will honor Martin Cooper, Joel Engel, Richard Frenkiel, Thomas Haug and Yoshihisa Okumura with the Charles Stark Draper Prize, which annually recognizes engineers whose accomplishments have significantly benefited society. Considered the Nobel Prize of engineering, the prize includes a $500,000 award. -
Provost Alan Cramb and VP Darsh Wasan Named AAAS Fellows
November 29, 2012IIT Provost Alan Cramb and Vice President for International Affairs Darsh Wasan have been named fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Election as a AAAS Fellow is an honor bestowed upon AAAS members by their peers. -
IIT Robotics Lab Develops Crash-Resistant Hybrid Terrestrial/Aerial Robot (Video)
November 29, 2012The HyTAQ Robot (Hybrid Terrestrial and Aerial Quadrotor) was developed in the IIT Robotics Lab by Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering Matthew Spenko and PhD candidate Arash Kalantari. The novel mobile robot is capable of both aerial and terrestrial locomotion. -
College of Architecture Faculty and Student Work Recognized at AIA Chicago’s 2012 Design Excellence Awards
November 12, 2012IIT College of Architecture faculty and students have been recognized in AIA Chicago’s 2012 Design Excellence Awards. At the October 26 event, five faculty-led firms received awards, including an award for a spring 2012 College of Architecture studio project. -
IIT Researchers Discover Powerful Tumor Suppressor
October 24, 2012A team of Illinois Institute of Technology researchers has discovered a powerful tumor suppressor found only in cancer cells, BaxΔ2, suggesting the possibility that the sick cells are generating a previously unknown protein to stop their growth. The discovery offers exciting possibilities for cancer prognosis and treatment. -
IIT Applied Math Alumnus Jacob Matijevic Honored Posthumously for Work on Mars Rover Missions
October 24, 2012Jacob “Jake” Matijevic (Math ‘69), a great space engineer, died on August 20, 2012 in Los Angeles, Calif. Matijevic received his bachelor’s degree from IIT and later earned a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1973. In honor of Jacob’s contribution to the Mars rover missions, NASA and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory named the rock found by the Curiosity rover, “Jake Matijevic.”
