June 14, 2013Offered by new Social Sciences visiting faculty member Carolyn Purnell, "Perceiving the World: Self, Society, and the Senses in Historical Context," will be of special interest to pre-med, bio-med, artificial intelligence/CS, architecture, civil e, natural and social science, psych, history and philosophy students as well as the generally curious. -

Professor Segerstrale to Discuss Her New Book, Nature’s Oracle
April 22, 2013Professor Ullica Segerstrale will talk about her new book Nature’s Oracle: The Life and Work of W. D. Hamilton (Oxford 2013) on May 2 at 3:15 pm, Perlstein Hall Auditorium. There will be a reception and book-signing afterward; books will be available for cash only at a discount for those who would like to purchase one. -
Segerstrale Publishes “Nature’s Oracle”
April 9, 2013Ullica Segerstrale, professor of sociology and director of the Camras Scholars program, has published Nature’s Oracle: The Life and Work of W.D. Hamilton. She will give a lecture, “The Edge of Creativity: A Look at the Scientific Life of W.D. (Bill) Hamilton,” with reception and book-signing at IIT on May 2 from 3:15-4:50 p.m. in Perlstein Hall Auditorium. -
Euro Challenge at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago
March 26, 2013On Friday March 22 Department of Social Sciences Associate Chair Rebecca Steffenson served as a judge for the Euro Challenge at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. The Euro Challenge is an experiential learning experience for high school freshman and sophomores funded by the European Commission. -

March 13, 2013Ullica Segerstrale, professor of sociology, gave a presentation at the Trieste Forum of the World Academy of Art and Science (WAAS), held March 4-7 at the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics, Trieste, Italy. The forum’s theme was “Impact of Science and Technology on Society and Economy.” -

February 18, 2013The Social Sciences Department will host the Benjamin Franklin Project Distinguished Lecture, “Democracy and the Built Environment,” on Tuesday, February 26, 7:00 pm, in the McCormick Tribune Campus Center Auditorium. The event will feature Peter Onuf, Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation Professor of History at the University of Virginia, and Marshall Brown, assistant professor of Architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology. -
Department of Social Sciences hosts EU Regional Faculty Workshop
January 30, 2013On January 25 and 26, the Department of Social Sciences co-sponsored a two day event with the University of Illinois’ European Union Center at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. The conference titled, “Researching and Teaching the EU: Best Practices and Current Trends in EU Scholarship” was attended by community college and university faculty from across the Midwest.
