Leading Philosopher and Historian Presents Sawyier Philosophy Lecture in Science, Technology, and Society
February 19, 2013Sandra Mitchell, professor and chair, History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Pittsburgh, will present the Sawyier Lecture, coordinated by the IIT Department of Humanities, on Friday, March 1, at 2:30 pm in the MTCC Ballroom. According to the 2011 Philosophical Gourmet Report, the Pittsburgh program is the top program in the world for the general philosophy of science, ahead of Cambridge, Carnegie-Mellon and Oxford universities. -
Oliver Stone and Peter Kuznick sat down with WTTW’s Chicago Tonight to discuss their book and documentary TV series while holding a screening and discussion of the series at IIT on February 1.

Architectural Record reports that proposals seeking to preserve and expand Northwestern University’s Prentice Women’s Hospital, submitted for a competition sponsored by the Chicago Architectural Club, will not be considered by the university, which has plans to demolish the structure to build its new biomedical research facility. The article notes that the judges for the design competition include IIT Architecture Professor John Ronan and architectural historian Kevin Harrington.

New Digital Humanities Series in the Fall
July 5, 2012For the 2012–2013 academic year, the Department of Humanities will hold a speaker series titled Goals and Boundaries in the Digital Humanities. The series will feature speakers from outside IIT and from departments across IIT to discuss the current state of the art in digital humanities and explore disciplinary issues within the emerging field. -
Spanish Language and Culture Course Returns this Fall
July 5, 2012Spanish language and culture courses are back, after a two-year-long effort by representatives of the Student Government Association. The Department of Humanities is once again offering a series of four sequential Spanish courses over a two-year period, with the cycle beginning anew each fall semester. -

Sawyier Philosophy Lecture in Science, Technology, and Society Featuring Jon McGinnis
March 28, 2012The Lewis Department of Humanities will host the Spring 2012 Sawyier Philosophy Lecture in Science, Technology, and Society, featuring Jon McGinnis, at 2:30 pm on April 13 in Life Sciences, room 111. McGinnis is an associate professor of philosophy at University of Missouri—St. Louis and is a Greco-Arabist who also has interest in medieval Latin science, philosophy and theology. -
