How to Join
The STA-21 application is composed of two parts:
 Complete online form at the following website:
https://www.sta-21.navy.mil/app.html
Collects basic information (name, rate, address, etc).
Begins the application process.
Follow-up portion of STA-21 Application.
Specific format and detailed requirements are found in OPNAVINST 1420.1A (Chapter 8).
Mailed directly to CNET.
Must be postmarked no later than 1 July of application year.
Missing documents will cause the application to be removed from selection board consideration.
Application consists of:
Application cover letter
STA-21 Data Form (Submit via STA-21 On-line Application Page or download). Download form only if on-line application is not feasible.
Typed, signed, and dated Personal Statement.
Certified copies of last five (5) observed enlisted evaluations (evals), if available.
+ Include "Not Observed" evals for continuity.
+ Special evaluations are not required.
Certified copy of SAT or ACT Assessment scores from test taken within three (3) years of application deadline (example: applicants for 2003 must submit scores from a test taken after 1 July 2000).
Certified copy of the Aviation Selection Test Battery (ASTB) scores (Pilot and NFO option only).
Certified academic transcripts from every high school and technical school attended (or GED certificate).
Certified academic transcripts from every college attended (if applicable).
Certified SMART Transcript.
Current photograph (Nuclear option only).
Certified copy of Personal Fitness Assessment (PFA) results from a test taken within 1 year of the 01 July application deadline.
Signed and dated Statement of Understanding, Page 13 Administrative Remarks (Nuclear Option only)
Additional documents (Optional).
+ Qualifications, letters of recommendation, awards, etc.
Commanding Officer's Endorsement.
Commanding Officer's Recommendation Form.
Command Officer Interview Board Appraisal Sheets (3)
Nomination Review Board Form
Nomination Review Board Officer Interview Appraisals (3)
Guidance to Commanders and Commanding Officers (Interview Verification Form)

Mountain Warfare
To maintain mobility in a mountainous environment, Mountain Warfare Training involves a lot of hiking with all of the unit's gear. The training shows Marines how to overcome any obstacle they might see in a mountainous environment.
