    Student Gmail Accounts

    Which IIT email accounts are being moved to Gmail?
    At this time, only student and alumni accounts will be moved to Gmail.

    Why is my email address domain changing to @hawk.iit.edu?
    Student email accounts will be Google accounts after the migration. However, staff and faculty accounts will remain on the current email platform. Therefore to enable the migration to Google a new domain name had to be established.

    Will department and student org accounts be migrated?
    No. Student organization email accounts will remain @iit.edu. Any new departmental accounts will also be in the @iit.edu format.

    Will faculty and staff email accounts be moved to Gmail in the future?
    At this time there are no plans to move faculty and staff email to Gmail. However, the option is being discussed by university leaders.

    How long will messages in my @iit.edu account be available for recovery?
    OTS will store student email for 90 days after go-live (August 5th). After that it will be unavailable.

    Will messages in all the folders in my @iit.edu account be migrated to my Gmail account?
    Yes, all messages will be migrated except those that have been marked as deleted or are in the Trash folder. Sub folders will migrate to Gmail labels. Messages in your iit.edu sub-folders will be moved to the corresponding Gmail "Label".

    Google will not accept attachments with some file types. Any emails with these attachments will not be migrated.

    Do I need to check my spam folder for university email?
    Yes, Google's very robust filtering may have initially caused some emails to be marked as spam and not delivered to your inbox.  The spam folder is located on the left side of your Gmail page.  To view your spam folder you may need to select the "more" link at the bottom of the folder list.

    Should I synchronize my myIIT password with my Google Apps account?
    Yes, to sync your password, login to the myIIT portal, go to the Training and Support tab and then the Google Apps Account Maintenance channel.  Clicking the "Sync Your Password" link will update your password securely from myIIT to Google.  Reasons to synchronize your myIIT password to Google include configuring your mobile device to access a Google account, using your @hawk.iit.edu account to authenticate with IIT Systems such as network registration, and setting up IMAP or POP access to your Google account.  It is recommended that you sync your password whenever you change your myIIT password.

    Will content in my iit.edu calendar be migrated to Google Calendar?
    No, but you can export the data as an iCal file and import it into Google yourself. Instructions can be found in the myIIT Training and Support tab/Office of Technology Services Portal Website/How to FAQs/Students.     Will staff who are also students be able to request that content be moved to their student accounts within the timeframe that it is being stored?
    No. Staff who are also students will have two separate email accounts: an @iit.edu address for work and an @hawk.iit.edu address for academics. No staff emails will be migrated or forwarded to the @hawk.iit.edu account.

    How long will incoming mail to @iit.edu accounts be forwarded to new @hawk.iit.edu accounts?
    In keeping with IIT's policy of email for life, email sent to students' @iit.edu accounts will be forwarded to the new @hawk.iit.edu account (only for accounts created prior to August 6th).


    Google Apps for Education

    How can I access my Google Apps account?
    Students, Faculty and Staff can access the service via the myIIT portal. A HawkApps icon will appear at the top of the page allowing access to the environment. For users with dual roles (Faculty/Staff and Student) there will be two HawkApps icons, one for each account.

    Can content be moved from existing Google Apps/Gmail accounts to the new IIT Account?
    Personal Google Accounts can be manually connected to the new IIT Google account, but this is to be performed by the user, OTS will not provide support managing personal Google accounts outside the IIT environment.
