Managing the Size of Your E-mail Mailbox
E-mail Quotas
The e-mail quota is the amount of e-mail storage (including attachments) that a user can store on the central -email server. If the assigned allocation is filled, no new mail can be stored in the account Inbox – in this case, newly received e-mail is returned to sender as “undelivered”.
Current default quotas on iit.edu are:
* students - 100M
* faculty/staff - 200M
Individuals who expect to utilize more space than their default quota should consider offline storage of e-mail in personal folders, including downloading attachments to a local computer and remove them from ones e-mail inbox.
When your inbox nears the quota you will receive a system generated notice. There are usually messages that have accumulated in your Trash, Sent and Draft folders. You can avoid this by adjusting your e-mail options.
1. Log into your e-mail account through myIIT.
2. Click the Options tab. You will see the E-mail Options window, which allows you to set options for your e-mail.
3. Click the Display Settings link. The Display Settings window contains four options:

Deleting Messages from Folder:
Select the Trash folder so e-mails will be removed when you manually expunge your trash folder or check the box below to delete messages in the trash folder whenever you logout.
Another option is to mark messages as deleted so e-mails will be removed when you manually expunge your trash folder or check the box below to delete messages in the trash folder whenever you logout.
Sent Messages:
If you want to keep messages you have sent, check the box next to Sent Messages. When you select to move the messages to the Trash folder they will be deleted when you expunge your trash or whenever you logout, depending on the previous settings you chose.
Remember: if you select to move these messages to the Sent folder you will need to expunge them manually.
Message Drafts:
Messages will accumulate in your Draft folder if you do not send them or periodically expunge the folder.
Reply Quoting:
If you check the box Include the original message in reply this is will increase the size of the e-mails saved in your Draft and/or Sent folders.
4. Set the delete and display options to suit your needs.
5. To apply changes click OK.
6. To exit without applying any changes, click Cancel.
