Policy No. A. 2.00

Date of Issue 4/97

Subject: Requisition and Recruitment

All hiring activity is focused on selecting the best qualified candidates while promoting employment opportunity for minorities, women, veterans and applicants with disabilities in compliance with federal and state laws and IIT's obligations as a government contractor. The following policies apply to non-academic, benefits-eligible positions scheduled to work at least 23.25 hours per week.

2.01 A Personnel Requisition must be initiated by the hiring department and delivered to Human Resources before any action is taken to consider an applicant for an open position. This requisition must be signed by the department head and appropriate vice president. The requisition should be accompanied by or preceded with a Payroll Authorization terminating the prior incumbent along with the letter of resignation or any other documentation regarding this separation. If the job description is to be revised, the updated version should be appended to the requisition.

2.02 Human Resources reviews the requisition and job description for proper classification and salary level. It also determines whether qualifications including specified education or experience requirements are demonstrably related to the job being filled.

2.03 Human Resources submits the requisition to the Budget or Project Accounting office for approval.

2.04 All positions must be posted by Human Resources for a minimum of five (5) business days before an offer is made. Posting includes displaying a printed copy of summary position descriptions and requirements on designated bulletin boards and access on the university website at http://www.iit.edu/hr/employment.html

Posting will not be required for the following:

a. A position at the level of vice president or president. Searches for these positions will be handled by the president or board of trustees as appropriate.

b. A temporary position, i.e., expected to be funded for less than six months.

2.05 Human Resources will work with the hiring department to determine appropriate sourcing for qualified candidates. Only Human Resources is authorized to place advertisements in publications announcing the employment opportunity.

2.06 A candidate for an available position must indicate the specific opening(s) for which he/she wishes to be considered. Human Resources will make every attempt to match applicants to other positions for which they may also qualify.
