Minor in PreMed Studies
Purpose
Students may enroll in a traditional premedical studies program that offers course preparation needed to apply to and succeed in medical school. This flexible program frees students to pursue any degree program offered at IIT while completing the specialized premedical coursework. Students are assigned a premedical adviser to help them structure a course of study to meet medical school admission requirements.
Premedical Advising
The IIT PreMedical Advisory Committee provides assistance to premedical students. Committee members will monitor your academic progress and provide information about volunteer and research opportunities. The committee will also write letters of recommendation and answer strategic questions about the medical school application process.
Curriculum
All students entering medical school need to have an understanding of the principles of the sciences basic to medicine. In particular, students will need an in-depth background in biology, chemistry and physics—which are all essential to the study and practice of medicine. A firm grasp of the English language is also essential.
To achieve a minimum level of understanding in these disciplines, ALL students pursuing a minor in premedicine must take the following courses as part of (or in addition to) their major program of study. Students who complete these courses will earn a Premedical Studies Minor upon graduation.
Students majoring in biology, molecular biochemistry and biophysics automatically satisfy all premedical studies minor course requirements.
