Thinkering Spaces
"A child comfortable tinkering with familiar items and playing with ideas will gain the confidence and self-awareness required to solve a wide variety of problems." This notion is the basis for IIT Institute of Design's Thinkering Spaces, a research project designed to help determine how digital technologies are changing the way young people learn, play, socialize and participate in civic life, and to design spaces that offer a hands-on, exploratory and experiential approach to understanding both physical and virtual worlds. Focusing on spaces within resource-rich libraries, Thinkering Spaces works to develop a prototype design for flexible, interactive, empowering spaces that offer opportunities for kids to develop the necessary skills for the future, such as critical thinking, systems understanding, creative problem-solving, information management and teamwork.
