Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs

Illinois Institute of Technology invites inquiries, nominations, and applications for the position of Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs. The successful candidate will work with IIT’s newly appointed President, John L. Anderson, to strategically enhance IIT’s position as a leading university in technology and innovation.

Founded in 1890, IIT is a private university, situated near the heart of Chicago, with approximately 7,300 students enrolled in bachelor through doctoral programs in engineering, science, architecture, business, design, psychology, social science, humanities, and law. With a strong emphasis on inter-professional education, coupled with a diverse international student population, IIT students are prepared for leadership roles in an increasingly global environment.

IIT’s research and education are conducted primarily within its seven colleges, schools, and institutes. In addition, IIT houses an aggressive contract research arm, a budding university technology park, and a multidisciplinary center for food safety and technology. IIT has substantial collaborations with other esteemed Chicago institutions, including Argonne National Laboratory, Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, and several prominent research universities in the Chicago metropolitan area.

The Provost serves as the university’s chief academic officer and is charged to advance the university in the following ways:

  • Provide leadership and a commitment to continued quality improvement of both undergraduate and graduate academic and research programs;
  • Work with faculty to develop an aggressive plan to expand and increase sponsored research opportunities;
  • Foster a culture of support for enhancing the overall student experience; and
  • Develop innovative and effective ways to provide global opportunities for  IIT faculty and students.

Successful candidates for this position should  have a record of academic leadership at the decanal level, as VP Research, as Associate Provost, or as Chair of a large department;  significant experience with budget and line responsibility; an accomplished record of scholarship with a strong reputation in one’s own academic discipline;  a record of successfully working with faculty from a range of disciplines and professional programs; and a commitment to advancing opportunities for women and underrepresented minorities.
