Certificate in Assistive Technology
Rehabilitation technology involves the systematic application of technologies, engineering methodologies, and scientific principles to meet the needs of and address the barriers confronted by individuals with disabilities in areas that include education, rehabilitation, employment, transportation, independent living, and recreation. Assistive Technology (AT) can increase independence in daily activities as well as vocational pursuits.
The RTP certificate program in Rehabilitation Engineering Technology exists to provide quality pre-service and in-service training to rehabilitation agency personnel in six Midwestern states, to meet individual rehabilitation needs of people with disabilities (specifically, rehabilitation technology services). The program strives to increase awareness of the benefits and potential funding sources of AT among people with disabilities, those that support them, and the general public.
The RET certificate program consists of three classes that prepare certificants to be experts/consultants in assistive technology used in rehabilitation. The sequence of courses are offered in a distance education format allowing students to earn the RTP certificate without physically coming to the IIT campus. The grant supports students in different ways. For some, it covers the three courses for the certificate. For others, it may cover part of tuition for all coursework. The amount funded depends upon the number of students interested and their financial need.
