Dr. Sher is Associate Professor and Director of the Clinical Psychology Program in the Institute of Psychology at Illinois Institute of Technology. Dr. Sher received a $2.4 million grant from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health. Her goal was to determine if improved interpersonal relations can result in sustained health behavior change, improved quality of life and tangible health benefits for cardiac patients. Based on a couples intervention strategy designed to optimize relationships and reduce interpersonal stress, Sher's team targeted three areas: exercise, weight management and compliance with lipid-lowering medication. For many cardiac patients, these are difficult areas to maintain long-term. Her current research involves the dissemination of her couples intervention for risk reduction on a wide scale.
