Russell Betts, dean of the College of Science and Letters and professor of physics, announced the winners of the 2008 CSL Dean's Excellence Awards at a luncheon in HUB on November 19. They included:
• Shangping Ren, assistant professor of computer science, who received the Dean's Excellence Award for Research, Junior Faculty
• Margaret Power, associate professor of history and pre-law program adviser, Dean's Excellence Award for Research, Senior Faculty
• Michael Pelsmajer, associate professor of applied mathematics, Dean's Excellence Award for Teaching
• Jim Maciukenas, communications associate and project coordinator, Dean's Excellence Award for Staff

Noting that there were many outstanding nominees this year, Betts named six additional faculty and staff of merit: Tomasz Bielecki, professor of applied mathematics; Joy Chong, assistant professor of chemistry; Rob Ellis, assistant professor of applied mathematics; Liz Friedman, program manager, professional science masters; Todd Kersh, administrative assistant, Department of Biological, Chemical and Physical Sciences; and Jialing Xiang, assistant professor of biology.
Betts also acknowledged eight students who received this year's CSL Undergraduate Summer Research Stipends: Emily Mick, Angela Pak, Scott Justus, Yaofu Zhou, Christos Mitillos, Kok Ann "Sam” Gan, Yacin Nadji, and Susan Mallgrave.
