FAQ
Great point. To start, we are focusing on implementing the infrastructure that will allow us to maximize how much "waste" we can divert from a landfill and recycle to another use. Now that most of the infrastructure is in place, our focus will actually be on reducing the total volume of items that are thrown away. We believe strongly in Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and in that order of priority.
Gunsaulus and the other apartment buildings have an infrastructure that will make it challenging to implement recycling. The current plan is to have some form of recycling available in Gunsaulus and the other apartment towers for next school year. We did not want to delay the roll-out of the whole program until we solved the apartment building issues, which is why we moved ahead with other parts of campus.
In each individual office that has a trash can, there should be a recycling container for your office paper. If you have any non-paper recyclables, we encourage you to walk them to the nearest station when you are done with the product. If your office has a significant amount of recyclables and you would be interested in your own station, please fill out the form accessible from the homepage, or contact us at campussustainability@iit.edu.
