    Registration Tools

    General Information for All Students

Please read the Registration Policies and Procedures page for information regarding registering, adjusting your schedule, and withdrawals.

If there is a hold on your registration, review the Registration Hold Information page to determine which office to contact in order to have your hold(s) resolved.

Please see the sections below to learn more about each subject.

    Registration Resources

The following tools are useful in planning and registering for the upcoming semester:

    • Guide to Student Self Service [pdf]: Detailed procedure for registering using the myIIT portal system.

    • Course Schedule Search: Search all courses offered during the current semester.

    • Course Catalog Search: View all courses on record by semester.

    • Undergraduate Course Repeat: Undergraduate students planning to repeat a course to replace a previous grade must enter a petition via DegreeWorks in the myIIT portal, under the Academics tab.

    • Graduate Course Repeat Form [pdf]: This form is intended for graduate students who wish to repeat a course.

    • Add/Drop Course with Minimum Hour Rules [pdf]: Undergraduate registration is secured against accidently dropping below full-time status, once registered for full-time hours. This is to facilitate the earlier distribution of federal financial aid and refunds. Prior to reaching full-time hours, undergraduate students are able to add and drop courses between one and 11 credit hours. Maximum credit-hour restrictions remain unchanged for both graduate and undergraduate students.

    Waitlisting @ IIT

    Important Facts about Waitlisting

    1. Your order on the waitlist is on a first-come, first-served basis.

    2. You must meet all course requirements before being allowed to waitlist. Course requirements include:
           a.  Prerequisites
           b.  All restrictions such as level, class, field of study, college, department, degree,
                program, and student attribute

    3. You can only waitlist for one section of a course. You cannot waitlist for multiple sections of the same course.

    4. Waitlisted courses do not satisfy prerequisites, corequisites, or links for other courses.

    5. You can waitlist for a course that is in time conflict with a registered course.

    6. You can waitlist for a course that is a corequisite to another course.

    7. You can waitlist for a course section that is linked to another course section. For example, CHEM 124 lectures are linked to CHEM 124 labs, which require registration for both a lecture and a lab concurrently. You can waitlist for a CHEM 124 lab without having waitlisted for a CHEM 124 lecture. However, once a seat becomes available in the CHEM 124 lab, you must register for the CHEM 124 lecture and the lab concurrently.

    How to Waitlist

Click here [pdf] for detailed instructions on how to waitlist.

    Waitlist Notification

You will NOT be automatically registered after waitlisting for a course. A waitlist notification will be emailed to your IIT email account when a seat becomes available for you. The seat is reserved for you until the expiration date and time in the email or until you complete the registration, whichever one comes first. The expiration date and time is viewable on your Student Detail Schedule in Banner Self-Service through the myIIT portal.

Check your IIT email account daily! You will be notified via email when a seat has become available for you. Once you add yourself to a waitlist, it is your responsibility to check your email daily to see if you receive a waitlist notification for an available seat.

Waitlist notifications DO EXPIRE! Waitlist notifications are emailed to your IIT email account when seats become available and will remain on your account for 72 hours (or for 24 hours beginning the Monday before the first day of classes). Please check the waitlist notification for the expiration date and time. If you do not complete the registration by the deadline given in the notification, then you will be removed from the waitlist and the seat will become available to the next student on the waitlist. If there is no other student on the waitlist, then the seat becomes an open seat and is available to any student who registers.

    Last Day to Waitlist

You can waitlist up to the last day of add/drop. All waitlists will be purged of any remaining students on the following day.

    Frequently Asked Questions Regarding Registration

What is a permit and how do I get one?

A permit refers to an instructor or department electronic permit. E-permits are placed in the system by an instructor or department permit approver—listed in a section above—in order to allow for registration into courses with restricted guidelines. A permit will override some registration add errors. Registration errors are listed in a section above.

You can view your e-permits in the myIIT portal—detailed instructions can be found in our Guide to Student Self Service [pdf].

Who do I contact for issues with myIIT?

If you are having issues with your myIIT portal account such as a disabled account or password problems, please contact the Office of Technology Services (OTS) Support Desk at 312.567.3375 or supportdesk@iit.edu.

How do I change the number of credit hours for my course?

If you are registered for a variable credit-hour course such as an independent study, you can change the number of credit hours for which you are registered via the myIIT portal. Under the Academics tab in the portal, click on the Change Class Options link in the "Registration Tools" channel.

Please adjust the credit hours by the last day to add/drop—see the Academic Calendar.

How do I get my credit-hours limit/study load increased?

If you wish to register for more than your allowed credit-hours load, you must receive the appropriate approval.

    • Undergraduate students must contact their academic advisor to initiate the approval process for an increase in hours.
    • Graduate students (excluding Stuart School of Business and Law) must complete the Graduate Student Petition (Form G701) and submit it to the Office of Graduate Academic Affairs for approval.
    • Stuart master graduate students must contact Stuart Academic Advising at advising@stuart.iit.edu for approval.
    • Stuart Ph.D. students must contact the director of the Ph.D. program for approval.
    • Law students must contact the Downtown Campus Registrar's Office at regq@kentlaw.iit.edu for approval.

The load limitations are available on our Registration Policies and Procedures page.

Why can't I register for an Internet/online course?

Undergraduate students must obtain an electronic permit in order to take an online course.

International students: Immigration regulations specify that no more than one class per term may be counted toward the full course of study requirement if the class is taken online. Additionally, your last and only course cannot be online. Students are allowed to take additional Internet classes over and above their fulltime enrollment, e.g. students on full-time co-op.

Further information is available on our Registration Policies and Procedures page.
