Prof. Rahamimoff Travel Grants Program
The BSF has announced the availability of funds for short scientific trips by young American or Israeli scientists to the other country. In 2010, a total of 10 grants will be awarded, each for $4,000.
The deadline for the submission of applications is December 17th 2009. Please follow the instructions given on the BSF website, www.bsf.org.il, under 'Grant Programs'/'Travel Grants'.
Winter Break Due Date Reminders - University Closed!
As we near the end of the semester and the end of the year, please note all items which have deadlines between December 18, 2009 and January 6, 2010 must be in OSRP no later than Wednesday, December 15, 2009, in order to allow sufficient time for completion prior to the winter break.
If you have any questions, please contact us at 312.567.3035 or at osrp@iit.edu. The University will be closed December 25, 2009 through January 3, 2010. We will reopen on January 4, 2010.
…..NSF is returning proposals because the biosketch is not in NSF format and proposals are not page numbered …NIH is changing the amount of pages for the research plan depending on the program announcement …grants awarded under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act have reports that are due quarterly, no exceptions are given for late reports …Completed proposals are due in OSRP at least two business days prior to the deadline, to guarantee submission..
NSF New Proposal Guidelines Go Into Effect January 1, 2010
The National Science Foundation (NSF) has published a revised version of the NSF Proposal and Award Policies & Procedures Guide (NSF 10-1). While these new changes are effective for proposals with a due date on or after January 4, 2010, we strongly encourage you to begin complying with these new guidelines now.
The new publication can be accessed at: http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/policydocs/pappguide/nsf10_1/nsf10_1.pdf
This is a summary of some of the important changes affecting your proposal preparations:
Chapter I.D.3, Full Proposal, has been supplemented with a reference to an Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) report on research integrity that may be helpful to proposers.
Chapter II.C.1.e, Proposal Certifications, has an entirely new proposal certification added regarding responsible conduct of research. When submitting a proposal to NSF, the Authorized Organizational Representative is required to complete a certification that the institution has a plan to provide appropriate training and oversight in the responsible and ethical conduct of research, to undergraduates, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers who will be supported by NSF. While training plans are not required to be included in proposals submitted to NSF, institutions are advised that they are subject to review upon request.
Chapter II.D.7, Proposals Involving Human Subjects, has been updated to reflect that if a certification of exemption is provided after submission of the proposal and before the award is issued, the exemption number corresponding to one or more of the exemption categories must be included in the documentation provided to NSF. (Note from OSRP: Please contact The Office of Research Compliance and Proposal Development if you have any questions. Email: irb@iit.edu or 312-567-7141.)
Exhibit II-1, Proposal Preparation Checklist, has been updated with a reminder that all proposals that include support for a postdoctoral researcher must include a mentoring plan in the Supplementary Documentation section of the proposal. Failure to do so will result in the return of the proposal without review. Additional guidance regarding the mentoring requirement and collaborative proposals is also included.

NIH New Guidelines Regarding Restructured Applications
NIH is changing the way that proposals have been submitted. Page limits for the research plan will decrease from 25 to 6 or 12 depending on the program announcement. Please review the full guidelines at: http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-10-016.html
Changes to Implement the Enhancing Peer Review Initiative: These new application guides (paper and electronic) implement the goals of the NIH Enhancing Peer Review Initiative (http://enhancing-peer-review.nih.gov/index.html) and include the following changes:
- The Research Plan is restructured and aligned with peer review criteria.
- Shorter page limits are adopted.
- The Biographical Sketch now requires a Personal Statement, and encourages applicants to limit the number of publications to 15.
- Instructions for describing Resources are modified to address the scientific environment and the institutional investment in Early Stage Investigators.
Removal of New Investigator Checkbox: In the PHS398 paper forms and in the PHS398 Cover Page Supplement component used in electronic application packages, the checkbox for "new investigator" has been eliminated. This information is now collected electronically in the eRA Commons Personal Profile.
New and Early Stage Investigator Policies Implemented: The PHS 398 and SF 424 (R&R) application instructions describe new and early stage investigator policies in Part III, 1.15.
New Assurance for Institutions Receiving Awards for the Training of Graduate Students for Doctoral Degrees: The new assurance for institutions receiving awards for the training of graduate students for doctoral degrees is required, as applicable (see Part III, 2.16 for details), and the training table 12A, required for institutional research training applications, is modified accordingly. Training tables 7a and 7b are modified to no longer require applicants to submit pre-enrollment data on individuals with disabilities and individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds in accord with NIH Guide Notice OD-09-153. The training tables are also reformatted to comply with Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act. Note these changes to the training tables are incorporated only in the versions now available on the SF 424 (R&R) Application and Electronic Submission website for use with submissions due on/after January 25, 2010.
Instructions Relocated to Accommodate Electronic Submission: Career Development Award instructions are now included in Part 1, Section 7 of the SF 424 (R&R) Application Guide for NIH and Other PHS Agencies, and instructions for Institutional Research Training Applications Including Ruth L. Kirschstein - NRSA Applications are now included in Part 1.Section 8 of the SF 424 (R&R) Application Guide, to reflect the transitions of these applications to electronic submission.
