Fund Searching Tip: Finding COS Keywords

When you are using the Community of Science fund searching service at, you can find keywords to employ in your search easily by using this tip: Expand the keywords section and enter your keywords in the small box at the bottom of the screen. See the illustration below for an example:

In the above example, the term “nano*” has been entered in the box, resulting in the “hits” shown at the bottom of the graphic above. Those results can then be clicked to be added to your automatic weekly funding alert. You could also open the various folders at the top of the screen, but it’s generally easier to find what you are looking for quickly with this method.

To do this, first log in at with your username and password. Locate the Keywords Browser at this URL: Next, next to the word “Keywords,” click the gray box marked “Browse…” The Keywords Browser will open up as shown above. Once it opens, make sure to expand it so it fills the entire screen. Then enter the term pertaining to your research, as shown in the above example. The asterisk (*) can be used to make sure you find all instances of a particular word. In the above example, entering “nano*” resulted in keywords such as nanoelectronics, nanomechanics, etc.
