    From the Editor’s Desk

    Dear Readers,

    Summer is in full swing! If you are lucky enough to have a reduced summer schedule, drop by and let’s get started with some fund searching or proposal submission efforts before you have to get back to teaching! Tell you what, if you can’t drop by the Main Building to see us, at least give the Research Support Services Web site a good look. There’s a full suite of services to help you with fund seeking, proposal development, regulatory compliance, submission tips. . .all available 24/7. You can start with some of the many links in this issue.

    Hope to see you at one of the workshops mentioned in this issue! Have a terrific summer, and don’t forget to write (proposals, of course!).

    All best wishes for success in your research,

    NSF Revises Grant Proposal Guide

    NSF has revised the GPG, the standard application packet for NSF grant proposals. The following note is from Jean Feldman, Head, NSF Policy Office:

    Dear Colleagues:

    We have published a revised version of the NSF Grant Proposal Guide (GPG) (NSF 04-23) that will be effective for proposals submitted on or after September 1, 2004. This document supercedes all prior versions of the GPG and can be accessed at: http://www.nsf.gov/pubsys/ods/getpub.cfm?gpg.

    This new version:

    • provides potential proposers with a description of the various categories of funding opportunities utilized by NSF to generate proposals, as well as the appropriate scenarios in which each are used;
    • incorporates new descriptive information on the types of submissions that may be required under NSF program solicitations, as well as the rationale for their use; and
    • implements enhanced capabilities in FastLane for submission of proposal file updates.

    A by-Chapter summary of significant changes is provided to assist the user in navigating through the changes. We strongly encourage potential proposers to review this document prior to the implementation date. Please note that, at this time, the document is only available in PDF. We anticipate that the HTML version will be available by the end of this month. If you have any questions regarding these changes, please contact the Policy Office on 703.292.8243 or by e-mail to policy@nsf.gov.

    Fund Searching Workshop Announced

    Whether your field is science, humanities, technology, or law… one truth is this: To be most efficient and effective at securing research funds, it is critical to be aware of the latest funding opportunities useful to your program. That’s why the Graduate College is sponsoring this free workshop on fund searching:

    WHEN: Friday August 20th, 2004, 11:45 to 1:00pm.

    WHERE: IIT’s Galvin Library Learning Center (LLC), Main Campus.

    WHO: This workshop is intended for IIT faculty and researchers.

    WHY: Learn how to search for funds. You’ll use an individual computer to learn how to:
    - Search for funding opportunities for your research;
    - Set up automatic weekly funding alerts tailored to your interests;
    - Search a database that will help you find collaborators at Chicagoland universities;
    - Employ techniques that maximize the number of search results.

    Each participant will receive an electronic file of links and tips. To reserve a space, email krell@iit.edu. The room accommodates 20 participants; walk-ins welcome as space permits. There is no charge for this workshop, which is provided as a service of the IIT Graduate College.

    IIT Equipment Sharing Corner Still In Its Corner

    On a fairly regular basis folks like to suggest that IIT provide a way for researchers to share equipment. We are happy to point out that there’s an existing mechanism that’s easy to use; it’s called the IIT Equipment Sharing Corner. Give it a try at:
