Research Equipment Sharing Corner
Research equipment is expensive, but sharing it reduces costs and helps the IIT research enterprise. Sometimes, faculty join together as a group to submit a proposal for extramural funding for research equipment. If you are interested in such an effort, please know that ORCPD would be happy to help broadcast your intentions and will help you seek others who would be interested in participating with you.
Please check out current equipment and announce what you have to share.
If you have any questions regarding your proposal, call the Office of Sponsored Research and Programs at 312-567-3035.
If you need help with FastLane, call the Office of Research Compliance and Proposal Development at 312-567-7141.

Helpful hints – these are some of the most common errors we see:
- Font size: you must use 10 point or larger (there cannot be more than 15 cpi)
- Page margins: must have 2.5 cm at the top, bottom and on each side
- Program solicitation number: Select 05-579
- Title: You must begin with the word “CAREER”
- Budget: the MINIMUM award size is $400,000 for a five-year period, except for BIO which is $500,000. Contact the OSRP early to develop your budget.
- Personnel: Co-PI’s are not permitted
- PI eligibility information: You must complete and submit the CAREER and PECASE certifications.
- Biographical sketches: Cannot exceed two (2) pages. Prepare following the instructions in the GPG. Be sure to include both research and education activities.
- Department Letter: You should get this from your department head (or equivalent) as soon as possible. Do not wait until the last minute to get this letter. If you cannot scan this letter into supplementary documents, the OSRP will do it for you, provided you give us ample time for uploading. There is specific information that must be included in this letter.
- The letter should be approximately one page long
- The letter cannot be an email – it must have a signature on it.
- After the signature, the department head (or equivalent) name, title and date must appear below the signature.
- Letters of collaboration: These are not letters of recommendations – these are short letters from collaborators to support proposed collaborations as stated in the proposal.

Research Support Services Handbook
The 2005 edition of the Research Support Services Handbook is now on the Web and available in PDF.
The Research Support Services Handbook is a comprehensive guide for faculty and staff on the preparation of proposals and administration of awards for sponsored projects. The Handbook is designed to advise investigators and project directors about their responsibilities for the preparation, review, approval, progress, management, and reporting requirements of sponsored projects. The handbook emphasizes the necessity for uniform and consistent financial accountability and documentation in proposal budgets; provides a "how-to" guide through the various administrative requirements of the proposal and award processing procedures of IIT; and provides an action guide for the review and implementation of the various compliance requirements.
