Sensor Conference - Call for Speakers
IIT tenured and tenure-track faculty members are invited to submit proposals for funding from the Educational and Research Initiative Fund (ERIF) at IIT. The maximum funding is not to exceed $25,000. Each proposal (including the budget and appendices) should be limited to eight pages. An original and six copies of the proposal are due by Friday, November 16, 2007, 5:00 PM in the Office of Sponsored Research and Programs, Room 301 Main Building. In particular, tenure-track junior faculty members are encouraged to submit proposals.
Strong preference will be given to proposals received from faculty that have not received ERIF awards and that meet the following requirements:
- High risk or innovative ideas that need pilot funding at the pre-competitive stage for seeking external funding. The ERIF grant may not be used to supplement existing grants and contracts.
- Show substantial promise for developing a larger proposal for external funding. Each proposal must include strong evidence that the PI has identified external funding agencies with potential interest in the proposal.
- New initiatives for the organization of multidisciplinary research programs leading to the development of research centers or consortia.
Starr / Fieldhouse Fellowships
The Graduate College invites IIT faculty members to encourage full-time students to apply for the Starr Research Fellowship and the Fieldhouse Research Fellowship. Each fellowship provides $15,000 for one year and can be used for tuition support and stipend. The fellowships are NOT renewable, but may be supplemented by funding from other sources.
The fellowships are made possible through a generous donation from the Starr Foundation and IIT’s capital campaign match to honor Mr. Irv Fieldhouse, who until his recent death had been an active member of the IIT-IITRI community for over 40 years. To enhance Mr. Fieldhouse’s commitment in developing joint research projects, both fellowships target research that leads to cooperation between IIT and IIT Research Institute (IITRI), National Center for Food Safety and Technology (NCFST), Fermilab or Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) researchers.
Eligibility:
IIT students currently enrolled in a Master of Science or Doctoral program in the following departments: BCPS, CHEE, CAE, CS, ECE, MMAE, or BME. AM students are eligible for the Fieldhouse Fellowship only. The student must be nominated by an IIT faculty member. (see below for faculty member eligibility)
The Fellows are required to pursue advanced study and research under faculty guidance; support faculty and their external advisors in specific research projects; and make their own contributions to academe through writing and research.
The Starr Research Fellowship requires a research collaboration with IITRI.
The Fieldhouse Research Fellowship requires a research collaboration with IITRI, NCFST, Fermilab or ANL researchers.
Eligibility of Advisor:
Tenured-track Assistant Professor or above, from BCPS, CHEE, CAE, CS, ECE, MMAE, BME, or AM (Fieldhouse Fellowship only). Note: The IIT advisor should recommend the contact and initiate the communication with IITRI, NCFST or ANL.
Application package:
- A completed application form
- A Proposed Plan for Research describing the proposed work, its novelty and importance, and its impact on collaboration between IIT and IITRI, NCFST or ANL
- Previous Research Experience form.
- Three letters of recommendation. (1) from the IIT research advisor; (1) from the external research advisor; and (1) other reference. Please include the Reference Report Form (2 pages) for each reference.
- Copies of college transcripts (duplicates of transcripts submitted to IIT and IIT transcripts, as applicable).
The Application Form and the Reference Report Form can be downloaded from the following website: http://www.grad.iit.edu/research/InternalFunding/starr_fieldhouse.html
DEADLINE: Please submit the complete application package by Wednesday, October 31, 2007 to:

As with previous Research Forums, the Fall 2008 forum will provide IIT researchers with the opportunity to learn about the various research activities that are taking place across the university. The goal of the forum is to assist in the creation of interdisciplinary research teams to go after large competitive grants. This goal will be accomplished through a series of brief three-minute presentations by a variety of researchers with time at the end for networking.
The Fall Research Forum will focus on new faculty members that have joined IIT in the past two years, and several of the small interdisciplinary groups that were formed over the summer. Additionally, the forum will feature the posters from IIT Day on Capitol Hill 2007 and seek input for IIT Day on Capitol Hill 2008.
Please contact Robert Lapointe by phone at 7-7135 or by email at lapointe@iit.edu if you have any questions.
IIT Research Day has been scheduled for Tuesday, April 22, 2008. IIT Research Day will feature the student poster session and the Sigma Xi Lecture. Please send any suggestions for the Sigma Xi speaker to Carlo Segre at segre@iit.edu.
