    Packing

Most airlines will allow you to check through 2 pieces of luggage whose combined total external dimensions do not exceed 162 inches with the total weight not to exceed 70 lbs. Generally, you are also allowed to take one piece of carry-on luggage.  It is best to check the rules of your airline before packing.  For federal guidelines regarding carry-on baggage, see www.tsa.gov.

    Packing Tips
    • Lay out everything you plan to take on the bed and cut it in half. You will have to carry everything you pack!
    • Make sure your covered luggage tabs are labeled with your name, address and phone numbers. Also, place your contact information inside each piece of luggage.
    •  Don't carry all of your valuables in the same place.
    • Leave a copy of itinerary, passport identification page, driver’s license, insurance documents, medical prescriptions and credit cards with friends or family. Pack another set of copies in a place separate from where you carry the originals.
    • Buy a money belt that can go around your waist or neck to hold important items.
    •  Have local currency available when you land in your host country. You may need to make immediate purchases of food and local transportation, and some vendors may not accept international credit/debit cards.
    • Remember that electrical goods may not work on foreign voltage systems. Pack converters and adapters for things you cannot do without – chargers for cameras or cell phones – and consider chipping in with roommates to purchase items like hair dryers or irons when you arrive.
    • It is a good idea to take a few small mementos of home with you -- photos of friends and family with brighten your room and remind you of what you’re temporarily leaving behind.  In addition, T-shirts or tokens from IIT or your hometown make nice gifts to new friends in your host country!
