Passports and Visas
International students at IIT should already have a passport, and will need to speak with an International Student Advisor about the immigration process when leaving and returning to IIT.
U.S. citizens may apply for a passport at the United States Post Office. If this is your first time applying, you will need to submit a birth certificate, photo ID, 2 color passport photos and $85. Please allow 4-6 weeks for passport preparation.
Each country has different rules and charges for visa applications. Some countries may require a medical examination or proof of vaccinations. Application fees will vary by country as well as your nationality. Please call the nearest consulate in Chicago for specific application and procedures. Contact information for consulates located in Chicago can be found here.
When you receive your passport and visa, make sure to give a copy to the Study Abroad Coordinator to keep it in your file in case of emergency.
We also recommend that you keep a copy saved in either Google Docs or in your email so that you always have it at your fingertips. Paper copies hidden in checked and hand luggage can serve as identification in the case of mixed baggage.
