Classes at VanderCook College of Music and Shimer College
Two small colleges are located on Main Campus. They are independent from IIT, but students can take courses at these schools, and many of their students live in IIT's residence halls.

VanderCook College of Music
VanderCook College of Music, founded in 1909, is a private, liberal arts college specializing in music education. A long-time companion of IIT and predecessor Armour Institute of Technology, VanderCook students live, eat, and play on Main Campus alongside IIT students. Students from each school can take courses at the other, and IIT students often participate in ensembles and performance groups at VanderCook

Founded in 1853 in Mount Carroll, Illinois, and focused on the "Great Books" curriculum, Shimer College moved to 3424 South State Street at IIT's Main Campus in fall 2005 from the northern suburb of Waukegan. Students from both Shimer and IIT can take courses at the other school; IIT students may take courses at Shimer for humanities or social studies credit.
