"I volunteered to help with contacting admitted students for the chemical engineering program in order to encourage them to actually enroll. This was a rewarding experience and I think as an alumnus I had credibility that perhaps the professionals in the field might not have. Some of the questions I was asked included 'What job opportunities exist for a chemical engineer? Am I restricted to working in a chemical plant?' 'What accommodations are made for vegetarians on campus?' 'Are there any jobs for chemical engineers who are graduating this year?' 'What about safety on your campus?' 'Does IIT help its graduates find jobs?' One student had decided to go to school closer to home (North Dakota) but we had a good conversation anyway and perhaps we will see him some day as a transfer student or for graduate school. Students and parents were pleased to learn about IIT's career management activities and especially the news that this year's June grads in ChE all had jobs or committed graduate admissions in December. I look forward to getting started with this program earlier next semester and suggest that a few hours spent talking with our prospective students would be satisfying to any IIT alum."

Alumni Volunteer; Recipient of the 2008 IIT Alumni Service Award
"I attended IIT as an undergraduate student in the period immediately following World War II. My chemical engineering curriculum consisted of 'bread and butter' science and engineering courses and electives that served to broaden my perspective. Military veterans made up a large percentage of the student body. There was a sense of purpose in the class sessions." Read more...
