The IIT Charles Pierce Scholarship Program honors Charles W. Pierce, a 1901 graduate of IIT (then known as Armour Institute of Technology) who was the first African American to receive a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering.

The program offers advanced second- and third-year undergraduate students visiting research experience at the leading science, technology, engineering, and mathematics university in Chicago — one of the country's most exciting and culturally diverse cities. Outstanding community college students in their second- or third-year of study are also invited to consider this visiting student experience.

As a Charles Pierce Scholar, you will:

  • Take courses at a university with strengths in STEM disciplines
  • Participate in IIT's unique Interprofessional Projects (IPRO) Program
  • Conduct hands-on research in STEM fields
  • Learn from workshops, seminars, fieldtrips, and IIT alumni mentors
  • Learn about Chicago-area Ph.D. programs

Read an article about Charles Pierce on the Chemical and Biological Engineering website.

2010-11 Charles Pierce Scholars

According to Micelle A. Giorgilli of Delaware State University, "I had an incomparable experience which I highly recommend to all undergraduate students. The school is a beautiful facility with a wide variety of class selections. Everyone was always so generous and helpful whenever I had a question or needed a helping hand. Attending Illinois Institute of Technology has been one of my favorite semesters of school."
