Overview

International students are those who are neither U.S. citizens nor U.S. permanent residents, regardless of where they are currently living or attending school. This means that U.S. citizens living abroad or in military or diplomatic zones are not considered international students, while foreign nationals attending school in the United States are considered international students.

Application and Admission Requirements

First-year

First-year students are those that are currently enrolled in secondary school, or have completed secondary school and have not attended a university outside of their secondary school experience. This includes students who have taken A levels in English language courses as long as they have not completed university coursework. Sometimes, these students are also referred to as "freshmen," regardless of their class standing upon entering the university.

  1. Complete the application for admission (online or paper [print out PDF]). There is no application fee for the 2012 year.
  2. Submit official or certified copies of the marks or grades of courses completed prior to university or college entrance, as well as all board examination scores. These copies must be submitted in the native language version and in English, where applicable.§§
  3. Take either the SAT I or ACT test and send the official*** scores directly from the testing center. The SAT code for IIT is 1318. The ACT code for IIT is 1040. We do not require that students take the SAT II subject tests.
  4. Provide an official copy of the TOEFL or IELTS score report.§§ The code to send your scores to IIT is 1318.
  5. Provide a completed evaluation form AND a letter of recommendation by your counselor or one of your math, science, or English instructors (an additional letter of recommendation is optional). This letter should include information about your achievements and any other important information that will illustrate your potential here. You may use the Common Application Teacher/Counselor Evaluation Form regardless of whether you have applied through the Common Application, Universal Application, or Standard Application.
  6. Submit IIT's Financial Affidavit of Support to demonstrate that you or your sponsor have available finances (minimum US$47,480) to meet the educational and living expenses while you are a student at IIT.
  7. Provide a copy of your passport.

Transfer

Transfer students are those who are currently attending a university, or have attended a university after finishing secondary school. We consider all students who fit either these criteria to be transfer students, regardless of the amount of college credit completed. In general, though, students with less than 30 semester hours will have to submit their secondary school transcripts and test scores, despite being classified as a transfer student.

  1. Complete the application for admission (online or paper [print out PDF]). There is no application fee for the 2012 year.
  2. Submit official or certified copies of your transcript(s) from all universities/colleges you have attended to the IIT Office of Undergraduate Admission. We require transcripts from all colleges attended, regardless of financial or academic standing, length of attendance, or length of time since attendance. These must be submitted in the native language version and in English, where applicable.§§
  3. Provide course description or syllabi of courses completed at the university level. These descriptions must be translated into English. This may be done by the student applying for admission.
  4. Provide an official copy of the TOEFL or IELTS score report.§§ The code to send your scores to IIT is 1318.
  5. Provide a completed evaluation form AND a letter of recommendation by one of your math, science, or English instructors (an additional letter of recommendation is optional). This letter should include information about your achievements and any other important information that will illustrate your potential here.
  6. Submit IIT's Financial Affidavit of Support to demonstrate that you or your sponsor have available finances (minimum US$47,480) to meet the educational and living expenses while you are a student at IIT.
  7. Provide a copy of your passport.
  8. Note: A student who has completed less than 30 credit hours at the university level must also complete the first-year application requirements.

§§ Official or certified documents must bear authoritative signatures, seals, and/or stamps. These should be sent directly by the institution responsible for issuing such documents. In cases where it is impossible to have these credentials sent from the issuing institution, or only one set of originals is available to students, applicants should forward an "attested" copy of the original. The attestation must be done by a proper institution official or by the Ministry of Education in the home country. A certified original translation must accompany all documents not issued in English.

If you are planning to transfer from a two-year college in the Chicagoland area, please refer to our transfer credit guidelines. The link below provides a guide for selecting courses from partner institutions for the major of interest.

Transfer Credit Guidelines

Exchange

Exchange students are those who are currently attending an IIT partner university and would like to study at IIT for one semester or one year on an exchange program. Please consult the International Office at your current university for more information about your study abroad experience. After the completion of the study abroad experience, these students will return to their home institution to complete their degree.

  1. Please follow all of the admission requirements for transfer students as listed above.
  2. Exchange students only need to demonstrate that you or your sponsor have available finances to meet the non-tuition expenses of $13,680 per year while you are a student at IIT.

Visiting

Visiting students are those who are currently attending a university and would like to study at IIT for one semester or one year on a study abroad experience. Visiting students attend universities that do not have direct exchange programs with IIT. Please consult the International Office at your current university for more information about your study abroad experience. After the completion of the study abroad experience, these students will return to their home institution to complete their degree. These students will not receive a degree from IIT.

  1. Please follow all of the admission requirements for transfer students as listed above.
  2. All admitted Visiting students will receive a $6,000 per semester scholarship to assist with tuition expenses. Visiting students are expected to demonstrate that you or your sponsor have available finances to meet the educational and living expenses while you are a student at IIT.

SAT/ACT

All First-year students and Transfer students with less than 30 credit hours are required to take either the SAT I or ACT test. Please send the official*** scores directly from the testing center. The SAT code for IIT is 1318. The ACT code for IIT is 1040. We do not require students that take the SAT II subject tests.

††† Official or certified documents must bear authoritative signatures, seals, and/or stamps. These should be sent directly to the institution responsible for issuing such documents. In cases where it is impossible to have these credentials sent from the issuing institution, or only one set of originals is available to the students, applicants should forward an "attested" copy of the original. The attestation must be done by a proper institution official or by the Ministry of Education in the home country. A certified original translation must accompany all documents not issued in English.
