Overview
Transfer students are those who are currently attending a college or university, or who have attended a college or university after finishing high school. We consider all students who fit either of these criteria to be transfer students, regardless of the amount of college credit completed. In general, though, students with less than 30 semester hours will have to submit their high school transcripts and test scores, despite being classified as a transfer student.
Students in a dual enrollment program while in high school are not generally considered transfer students based solely on their attendance of a college or university as part of a dual enrollment program.

Admission Requirements
Transfer students are admitted for both the fall and spring semesters. To apply, use our online application. You should ensure that their college transcript(s) be submitted to complete your application. If you have not completed 30 semester hours, you will also have to submit a high school transcript.
We admit students on a rolling basis. You should complete your application as soon as possible, however, to ensure proper time for evaluation and processing. We recommend that applications for the fall semester be complete by July 1, and for the spring semester by November 1.
Transfer applicants must be in good academic standing at the college most recently attended to be considered for admission to IIT. Students currently on academic probation, or who have been dismissed for academic or other reasons, will not be considered for transfer admission. Students must also be in good financial standing at all previously attended colleges/universities.
Transfer admission is based on a cumulative grade point average (GPA) and individual grades in all classes that apply to the major you wish to study at IIT. It is highly recommended that you have completed 30 credit hours, have taken physics and/or calculus, and that you are in good standing academically and financially.
Application Requirements
- Application for Admission Submit your complete application by paper or online. IIT accepts the Common Application and the Universal Application and considers each equally. After you have written your essay, send it along with any supplemental information.
- Personal Statement Please provide a statement (250 words minimum) that addresses your reasons for transferring and the objectives you hope to achieve.
- Counselor Evaluation Form or Letter of Recommendation If you are currently enrolled in school, have a professor or academic counselor complete the evaluation form included in your application and submit it directly to the IIT Office of Admission. If you have been out of school for a length of time and cannot obtain an academic recommendation from someone who knows you well, you may substitute an employer as your evaluator. (Forms can be found here.)
- Official School Transcripts Have the registrar from all colleges/universities send a copy of your official transcript(s) to the IIT Office of Admission. We require transcripts from all colleges attended, regardless of financial or academic standing, length of attendance, or length of time since attendance.
- Test Scores If you have less than 30 semester hours of transferable college work earned after secondary school graduation, you must submit:
- Official transcripts from all secondary schools attended
- ACT or SAT I scores
- Financial Aid You will automatically be evaluated for merit-based scholarships upon admission to the university. If you are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident and would like to apply for federal aid, please submit your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online after January 1 at fafsa.ed.gov. Our FAFSA code is 001691. For details on how to apply and the types of financial aid available, please refer to the Financial Aid website.
- If you are interested in any of our special programs, please click here.
Finances & Scholarships
Financial aid for new transfer students is processed by the Office of Financial Aid. IIT offers both need-based financial aid and merit scholarships.
All transfer students are reviewed for Transfer Tuition Scholarships (up to $12,000). In addition, students who are members of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) are eligible for the Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship ($5,000 per year) upon proof of PTK membership.
To be considered for financial aid at IIT, students must submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or renewal FAFSA. Designate "IIT" on the FAFSA with our Title IV code, 001691, so we will receive your electronic Student Aid Report (SAR).
Note: Spring semester transfer students, in addition to the FAFSA, need to submit financial aid transcripts from all colleges attended (including your current college), even if you did not receive financial aid from some or all of the schools. Send this material to the Office of Financial Aid.

Transfer Credits
Official credit evaluations are completed only after the student has been admitted to IIT. Within a few weeks of your notification of admission, you will receive an official evaluation of transfer credit, showing which classes transfer to IIT and how they apply to your degree program.
If you are planning to transfer from a two-year college in the Chicagoland area, please refer to our transfer credit guidelines. The link below provides a guide for selecting courses from partner institutions for the major of interest.
For an unofficial transfer credit evaluation from any accredited four year or two year institution, please use the WebTreQer link seen below. WebTreQer is a tool that allows you to see an unofficial audit of your courses.
Only courses from accredited colleges/universities are acceptable for transfer (see below for recognized accrediting organizations), and must be comparable in nature, content and level to those offered at IIT.
- IIT does not grant credit for vocational courses or life/work experience.
- Technology courses will not be accepted in any engineering program.
- A maximum of 68 semester hours of transfer credit is permitted from a two year college.
- There is no maximum number of hours of transfer credit permitted from a four-year college; however, your final 45 semester hours must be completed at IIT.
- Transfer credit will be accepted for courses completed with the equivalent grade of "C" or better. A grade of "C-" is not acceptable for transfer credit.

Architecture portfolio reviews
Transfer students admitted to the College of Architecture are required to submit a portfolio of their work for credit and placement purposes. Reviews are available only to deposited transfer students intending to enroll in the fall semester. The College does not review portfolios for prospective students or students who have not decided to enroll at IIT.
Students will be contacted about setting up portfolio review sessions in late July. Portfolios must include work from all courses, including Spring 2011 courses. Please do not request a review until you have submitted to IIT your Spring 2011 transcripts showing grades for completed courses. Once you have submitted your final transcripts and your deposit to IIT, you should contact the College of Architecture at 312.567.3230 to schedule your portfolio review.
Admitted transfer students living outside the Chicago area may mail their portfolio, with a note indicating that they will be unable to be present on-campus for their portfolio review, to:
College of ArchitectureIllinois Institute of Technology
Attn: Stephen Sennott
S.R. Crown Hall
3360 South State Street
Chicago, IL 60616
Students wishing to have their portfolios returned after remote review must provide a self-addressed and postage-paid envelope or package, or arrange in advance to pick up the portfolio upon arriving on campus in the fall. For those transfer students unable to complete a portfolio review during the summer, we will offer additional portfolio review appointments during the first week of classes on an as-needed basis.
Portfolio Guidelines
The portfolio should measure approximately 8.5" x 11" (21.6 cm x 27.9 cm). Students may choose the design and content of their portfolio, as long as it presents original visual work that corresponds to each course in need of review by the College of Architecture. When possible, please include a university course description or a faculty member's syllabus for each course; you are also encouraged to provide your own brief summary for each course. A College of Architecture studio faculty member will examine all of these materials in order to place each student in an appropriate year of studio; however, the visual work will be the determining factor. The goal of the portfolio review is to notify incoming transfer students where they will begin their studio sequence at IIT and how many courses will or will not receive transfer credit. Each student's specific schedule of courses for the first semester will be determined in a separate advising conversation.
Credit & Placement
Placement in the studio sequence is based upon previous studio courses and the quality of the work completed for each course. Similarly, additional architecture courses will be reviewed for transfer credit when they correspond to IIT courses in the B.Arch. curriculum. In some cases, more than one course at a previous university will be used for the equivalent of a single course at IIT. Courses in AutoCAD and other courses related to digital design may be reviewed separately by the faculty who teach computer courses at the start of the fall semester. In some cases, students may consider earning credit for these by taking a proficiency exam. This exam is arranged at the start of the fall semester, and is administered at the discretion of the College of Architecture faculty.
If you have any further questions about the portfolio review or the content of your portfolio, please contact the College of Architecture at arch@iit.edu.
Engineering Program
This program is a consortium between Chicago State University's (CSU) Office of Engineering Studies, the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), and IIT. It is for high school graduates interested in engineering, but who are not necessarily ready for the rigors of university. Students who enter this challenging program complete the required coursework in mathematics and basic sciences at Chicago State University that enables them to qualify for transfer to accredited bachelor's degree programs in engineering at our partner institutions. Students who meet the program's admission requirements will find that they are fully supported in their engineering studies by a full range of academic services and a staff that has special responsibility to provide sound academic guidance.
Preparatory coursework is available to assist those students who must acquire prerequisites to enter engineering studies courses. The program can be paced to fit students' scholastic background and individual learning needs.
