The 2010 Allen C. Lewis Prize for High School Journalism on Technology, Science, or Business

First Prize: $300  •  Second Prize: $200  •  Third Prize: $100

A total of six prizes will be awarded: three to high school seniors, and three to high school juniors.

Deadline: Monday, April 19, 2010 (Note: the deadline has been extended from April 5.)

The Allen C. Lewis Prize, named for one of the founders of Illinois Institute of Technology, is designed to encourage high school journalism students to think critically and write clearly for the general public about complex topics and issues in technology, science, or business.

Entries should be feature stories that explore the human, cultural, or social dimensions of a development in technology, science, or business.

Eligibility: Registered high school juniors and seniors in the United States during the 2009-2010 academic year.

Suggested Length and Format: 2,000 words. Entries should be aimed at a general audience and be the original, unpublished work of the student. Only one essay per student may be submitted per year. The entry may be accompanied by photography or other illustrations, as long as these are also the original work of the entrant.

Submission Instructions: Students must complete a Contest Entry Form and have it signed by their Faculty Sponsor. No name or identifying information should appear on the title page or elsewhere in the manuscript. Any interested instructor or guidance counselor may act as a Faculty Sponsor and endorse the quality and authenticity of the entry and verify the student's enrollment.

EACH ENTRY MUST BE SUBMITTED AS BOTH A PAPER COPY AND A DUPLICATE ELECTRONIC COPY.

  • Paper copy must be postmarked by Monday, April 19, 2010 and mailed, with a signed entry form, to:

  • Electronic copy must be emailed by Monday, April 19, 2010 to lewisprize@gmail.com as an attachment in MS Word .doc or .docx format. The file name should be Lastname.Firstname.doc. The text of the email should include the entrant's full name, address, high school affiliation, and title of entry.
  • Entrants should keep a copy of their entries, as submissions will not be returned.

Judging: Essays will be judged anonymously by faculty and advanced PhD candidates in IIT's Lewis Department of Humanities. Winners will be announced in May 2010. Entries will be judged on their adherence to journalistic standards of quality and accuracy and on their success in presenting complex information in a comprehensible and interesting way. Rights of Publication: The entrant retains the right to publish his or her entry; however, IIT also reserves the right to publish winning entries, in whole or part, and the winners' names on its website or in university publications or presentations without further consideration.
