Architecture

Overview

A global city of innovation and urban beauty, Chicago is recognized for its extraordinary architecture and award-winning architects. On IIT's historic Main Campus, National Historic Landmark S.R. Crown Hall has been an inspiration for generations of pioneering architects. Designed by educator and architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Crown Hall is filled with natural light and equipped with state-of-the-art technology, making it an innovative, project-oriented studio environment. Collaborative learning in small classes resembles professional practice in architecture offices. Equipped with comprehensive design and building abilities, our graduates know how to utilize modern materials, sustainable design practices, and digital technologies to build complex and efficient structures for the 21st century.

Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.)

The NAAB-accredited, five-year professional Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.) degree offered by IIT is recognized by architectural firms as among the best in the United States. Combining design with a solid grounding in building technologies, IIT's architecture classes prepare graduates to succeed as creative and collaborative problem solvers.

IIT's Bachelor of Architecture students develop design and technical abilities in the three-year foundation studio sequence, which is supported by engineering, planning, building systems, architectural history/theory, and computer courses. The curriculum incorporates numerous architecture electives, allowing students some independence to concentrate or diversify their studies around highly relevant design subjects. In the final two years of advanced studios, students concentrate on a range of comprehensive building and design problems. Studio topics encompass building types, sustainable design, theoretical issues, new material technologies, landscape architecture, the environment, or the design of large building complexes.
