Overview

The Department of Computer Science offers two programs in computer science: a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and a Bachelor of Science with specialization in Computer Information Systems. Both programs provide a background in computer science and allow for ample study in other areas. Where these programs differ is in the approach taken towards computer science. The Bachelor of Science in Computer Science focuses on the theory and practice of computer science, while the Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems balances study in computer science with study in another field. In addition to these programs, the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering jointly offer a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering. This program focuses on the digital electronics hardware used in computer systems and the software that controls this hardware, with an emphasis on the design and implementation of computer-controlled systems.

Bachelor of Science in Computer Science (B.S.)

The Bachelor of Science in Computer Science trains students to design and develop advanced software systems and gives them in-depth experience emphasizing the theory and practice of computer science.

Students explore the conceptual underpinnings of computer science, from fundamental algorithms and programming languages to operating systems, software techniques, and more. They choose from a rich set of electives such as computer graphics, artificial intelligence, database systems, computer architecture, and computer networks. Students can combine computer studies with study in another field, either through a well-defined specialized minor or by working with an adviser to design a program that includes interdisciplinary experiences.

Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems (B.S.)

The Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems degree offers an interdisciplinary curriculum of computer science along with another field of study. For example, students may choose computing with a business focus (management information systems) or with a natural science focus (computational physics).

Typical careers for IIT graduates with this degree include: application developer/manager, computer programmer, enterprise architects, hardware support analyst, help desk analyst, MIS/IT director, network analyst, network manager, programmer analyst, software developer, software engineer, system analyst, technical analyst, technical support analyst, Web developer, and Web administrator. There are a wide variety of job opportunities for applicants with a master's degree in business administration or management information systems with technology as a core component.
