Explore STEM+ at IIT
Explore STEM+ at IIT made its debut March 14-March 17, 2011, allowing students and teachers to participate in workshops exploring majors and careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, Architecture, Business, and Psychology.
The program engaged students and teachers in multiple disciplines designed to be challenging for yet accessible to all levels of high school students. Additionally, all workshops aligned with Illinois State Board of Education and National Learning Standards, and attending teachers were provided with follow up activities to bring back to their classrooms.
Students participated in a variety of workshops:
- Building Blocks for Team Communication — Using LEGO blocks, students work in teams to build a replica of a prototype. There are two problems: the builder can't see it and the looker can't talk!
- Experience Archiitecture — Create your own architectural model using a provided kit of parts — none of which can be bent or broken and all of which must be used! This workshop encourages creativity, innovation, and self-expression through discussion and hands-on exploration of space and form. Developed by IIT's chapter of the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS).
- Mechanics of Roller Coasters — Did you ever wonder how roller coasters like the Dare Devil Dive or Vertical Velocity work? Join us to discover the underlying principles of physics and mathematics that make such thrilling rides possible — then compete in teams to make the most innovative miniature roller coaster! Developed by IIT's chapter of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE).
- Robot Obstacle Course — Explore the engineering design process by optimizing an autonomous line-following robot to navigate through a challenging obstacle course. Learn how real engineers solve problems! Developed by IIT Camras Scholars' Intuitive Modules in Engineering Education (IMiEE) outreach program.
Each Explore STEM+ workshop was proposed and developed by IIT undergraduate students and student organizations with the support and approval of IIT faculty.
Dates for the 2012 Explore STEM+ at IIT will be announced soon. For more information please contact Marya Spont, Community Liaison and Outreach Coordinator for Undergraduate Admission, at spont@iit.edu or 312.567.5193, with any questions. Thank you for your interest, and we look forward to greeting you on-campus soon!
