Collens Scholars
Collens Scholars come to IIT from high schools across Chicago, bringing greater knowledge and understanding of the communities around them. They are some of the strongest and most dedicated students in the city and on our campus, and they are interested in everything from sustainable architecture to chemical waste management. Since the launch of the Collens Scholars Program at the end of the 2006 academic year, IIT has enrolled three classes of former CPS graduates. In Fall 2010, 29 students from 20 CPS high schools entered IIT on the Collens Scholarship to study 15 different majors, and to date 93 CPS students have benefited from this scholarship.
The Collens Scholarship honors former IIT President and CPS high school alumnus Lewis Collens. Lew Collens's not only served as president of IIT for 17 years, but also was dean of Chicago-Kent College of Law, where he taught corporate and securities law.
As with all IIT students, Collens Scholars demonstrate a high standard of academic excellence, aptitude in mathematics and science, social service, and a desire to pursue a high quality educational experience. Specifically the scholarship is offered to CPS seniors who demonstrate defined financial need; it provides full financial support for all tuition, books and fees.
