On Friday, February the 22nd, Illinois Tech's Chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) hosted the annual Spring Employment Seminar, in conjunction with the Computer Science Department. Held in the Stuart Building lecture hall, the purpose of the seminar was to disseminate information to career-minded students about the layout of the job market and techniques to get the attention of employers.
The seminar began with introductions from Dr. Martha Evens, a professor from the Computer Science Department, followed by Sohan D'souza, the President of ACM-IIT.
The speakers were all Illinois Tech alumni who had settled themselves well in the professional world, making the event all the more relevant to the Illinois Tech student. As they shared their experiences with resumes, work, education, promotions and success with the sizeable audience of faculty, staff and more than fifty students, the captivated attendees responded enthusiastically with numerous career-oriented questions.
Ed Alfonso from Motorola and Maya Sheehy Chase from Tellabs spoke about the challenges facing student jobseekers with the recent economic downturn. Jami Montgomery from Lucent Technologies talked about the fine art of resumes, among many other issues.
Robert Louis Stevenson, formerly employed at Sun Microsystems, and now at IIT himself, and Ahmad Tayeh from Robert Morris College also presented various topics related to employment from an Illinois Tech alumnus' perspective. As the audience munched on the pizza, Sean Bullington and Meng Tuck Chong from STG, a company closely connected to Illinois Tech, gave the audience many interesting insights into the professional world.
The audience participated with gusto, with the guests enthusiastically answering their queries. The event ended with a closing statement from Professor David Grossman, and announcements from ACM.
ACM recently hosted a Network Games event, and a RobotWars contest as well. This semester, ACM will also host a Computer Science Department Student Relations forum, as well as the much-anticipated AIPCL Chicagoland InterCollegiate Programming Contest, among many other exciting events.
ACM's current executive board is comprised of Sohan D'souza as President, Michael Zatopek as Vice-President External, Nikolay Tchervenski as Vice-President External, Chris Boyd as Treasurer, and Boyan Semerdjiev as Secretary, as well as Bob Reichel as the Senior Student Advisor, and Dana Herz as the Staff Advisor.
