About 6 years ago, the climbs in the Overlook Area (or Minnesota strip) know as White Knight and Black Knight were destroyed in a major rock fall. Since that time, Interstate State Park has monitored the area for further ,movement of the rock slope. The main factor for movements/sliding/instability of the rock slope is climatic, i.e. freezing/thawing and rainfall.
Because of the history of instability, the park will continue observing and assessing the movement and fracturing of these cliff faces. Strain gauges have been installed in some areas of the cliff. The climbs in this area will be closed to all public use.
(the numbers are from "Rock Climbing Minnesota and Wisconsin", by Mike Farris) Be familiar with the location of these routes. Climbing area maps are available at the Visitor Center and Park Office. Please contact a park ranger if you see anyone in a closed area.
Do not tamper with any monitoring devices or equipment. If you witness vandalism or find evidence that any tampering with the equipment has occurred, alert park staff immediately.
Limit activities at the foot of this rock climbing area. The area contains loose and dislodged rock.
