Course description:
This studio emphasizes architectural design and construction in the development of building projects using steel as the primary structural material.

The goals of the course are to develop:
1)An understanding of the relationship between materials, structural systems, construction methods and architectural expression.
2)A knowledge of the production and fabrication of steel components, including economic and aesthetic considerations.
3)A scholarship of historic examples of steel construction.
4)Conceptual thinking about architecture and the cultivation of design ideas.
5)An investigation into how details reinforce design concepts and express the character of architectural materials.
6)Abilities in the structural analysis of framing systems, frame connections and details.
7)Competence in the design and detailing of enclosure systems, their relation to structural framing, spatial definition and environmental concerns.
8)Skill in the use of two-dimensional and three-dimensional representational media as design tools.
9)Aptitude in the representation of design ideas and intentions.

Teaching Method:
The course consists of studio and desk critiques, lectures and periodic reviews. There will be one design projects for the Fall semester divided into two distinct phases, Schematic Design and Design Development. The schematic design phase will conclude just before the semester break. See schedule attached.

Evaluation:
Primary student evaluation will be based on design work and the appropriate use of steel as a building material. Other factors contributing to grading include, periodic assignments, sketch-books, student-instructor dialogue, participation in class-wide critiques and discussion and the individual development of the design process.

Attendance is mandatory. Any planned absence must be cleared in advance with your professor. Three or more absences from studio without approval will constitute a failure for the course. You will be expected to arrive to studio on time and to remain in studio during class hours, attendance will be taken at the beginning of each class period.
