How to find information about Hawk accounts, web pages creation?

How to transfer a web page you have created on your PC
to your Hawk account?

In which folder/subdirectory should you place your studio work?

How to find information about Hawk accounts, unix, web pages creation?

To find information about servers, and web pages creation, check CNS web site.

To create web pages:

http://www.cns.iit.edu/html/aboutwww/createWP.html

If you have a Hawk account but never used it (you have your username and your password to access.
to access your Hawk account from a PC on the campus: use SecureCRT or Telnet.
In windows, go to Start, select Run, type telnet Hawk.cns.iit.edu, this opens a black and white window: after you provide your username and password (To start with, your user password is your ID/SS number), you are now logged in Hawk.

To get your account ready for homing your web pages: Mkweb is a routine to create automatically an environment for web pages in your account.
Once you have the prompt (for example: Hawk:/usr2/student/c/clinton> ) simply type mkweb.
It will create a www subdirectory in which you will place all your web pages and it will also create an index web page (you can edit its content but not change the name index.html). You will need to use mkweb only once (to get your account ready for the homing your web pages.)

Never hesitate to call the CNS Helpdesk at (312) 567 5810. (they are already very busy answering my questions, but they will be happy to answer yours too. They are nice and patient!)

How to transfer a web page you have created on your PC to your Hawk account?

To upload your web pages on to Hawk, use a file transfer utilitylike WS_FTP LE.
Download (free) WS_FTP LE from www.downloads.com
Once you have run the installation on your computer and placed a shortcut icon inthe Start menu, launch WS_FTP LE. Check this screen capture of the info you have to type in when you connect (called Session profile pannel).
Once the connection has been established, you see your local disk (on the left pannel) and the remote disk (Hawk, on the right). You can navigate allong the tree of your directories to locate the file you want to transfer. To transfer a file, highlight it and use the little arrow in a box placed between the two pannels.

Important: to make your file accessible from the internet, make sure that your files are placed in a subdirectory of the www subdirectory of your Hawk account.

How to name your assignments, in which folder/subdirectory should you place them?

Please help us make it easy to link your personal studio web page to this class web page:

Create an archtecs subdirectory of your www Hawk account, and create an index.html file that will present all you studio work.

To create the subdirectory archtecs using WS_FTP LE, first double click on www subdirectory to open it and then use the mkdir button (top right corner) of the remote machine pannel,

The Research assignment is due Monday Feb3, 2pm.

You must hand in a paper/powerpoint or web document. You will present your research to the class.

-On Wednesday Jan 28 (tuesday is possible too) we'll go to the AHR Expo (Air Conditionning, Heating and Refrigeration) at McCormick Place. We will provide you with the badges for free access on Monday or Tuesday.

Show hours are 10am to 4pm on Wed so we should go early. (Tuesday is open until 6pm)

Take a camera with you.

-Research: Use the library, both reference books, magazines (archi and Architecural engineering) and databases.

Check the index in the books to find other titles that seems imteresting to look at.

Make scans (keep track of the source, the page number, ISBN)

Search the web,

search engines: www.google.com, www. scirus.com (scientific)
search research centers sites, federal agencies (EPA, DoE, Nasa,...)

Check the web sites of companies/ fabricators that have participated to innovative projects (find if their name have been credited in books or profesional magazines)
