Professional Interests

Macromolecular Crystallography, including methods development; application of synchrotron radiation to biological structure research; crystallographic computer software development; structure determination of chirally selective antibodies; structural studies of cytochrome C peroxidase; structures of proteins found during gene-sequencing efforts.

Introduction to the Professions; a freshman survey course dealing with the realities of science and a scientific career. The course includes discussions of the definition of science, the tools of science, science as a career, safety in science, the history and philosophy of science, and similar subjects. Assignments include numerous exercises in writing, because writing is essential to the effective conduct of science. The course features an opportunity for students to present results orally, and it includes at least one field trip during the semester. Textbook: James Trefil, 101 Things You Don't Know About Science and No One Else Does Either (New York: Houghton Mifflin, 1997), 355pp., paper.

Health Physics: As co-director of IIT's Masters in Health Physics program, I endeavor to bring students of this discipline together with experts in the field. I'm not a health physicist myself, but I do teach radiation biophysics as a component of this program, and I am developing some understanding of the rest of the field.
